Overall situation
In mid-December 2025, key steel enterprises produced a total of 18.45 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily output of 1.845 million tons, a decrease of 1.3% compared to the previous period; 16.81 million tons of pig iron, with an average daily output of 1.681 million tons, a decrease of 1.9% compared to the previous period; and 18.03 million tons of steel products, with an average daily output of 1.803 million tons, a decrease of 1.4% compared to the previous period.
Based on these estimates, the national daily crude steel production in this ten-day period was 2.27 million tons, a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous period (see Figure 1); daily pig iron production was 2.02 million tons, a decrease of 3.1%; and daily steel product production was 3.85 million tons, a decrease of 0.7%.
Situation by region
1. Crude steel production
In mid-December, among the six major regions, only the daily crude steel production of key enterprises in Northeast China, North China, and East China showed an increase compared to the previous ten-day period, while other regions experienced varying degrees of decline. Specifically:
In the Northwest region, daily crude steel production decreased by 0.2 million tons (-1.8%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Shaanxi Province saw a decrease of 0.2 million tons (-9.4%).
In the Southwest region, daily crude steel production decreased by 0.3 million tons (-2.3%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Chongqing Municipality saw a decrease of 0.2 million tons (-14.1%), and Sichuan Province saw a decrease of 0.1 million tons (-2.4%).
In the Central-South region, daily crude steel production decreased by 34,000 tons (-11.4%), mainly due to a decrease of 34,000 tons (-62.2%) in Hubei Province and a decrease of 4,000 tons (-6.0%) in Guangdong Province. In addition, Henan Province saw an increase of 3,000 tons (+5.0%), and Hunan Province saw an increase of 2,000 tons (+4.4%).
In the Northeast region, daily crude steel production increased by 8,000 tons (+3.9%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Liaoning Province saw an increase of 7,000 tons (+4.5%), and Jilin Province saw an increase of 1,000 tons (+4.2%).
In North China, daily crude steel production increased by 1,000 tons (+0.2%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Shanxi Province saw an increase of 6,000 tons (+5.7%), and Tianjin City an increase of 2,000 tons (+4.7%); however, Hebei Province experienced a decrease of 6,000 tons (-1.4%).
In East China, daily crude steel production increased by 6,000 tons (+1.0%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Fujian Province saw an increase of 7,000 tons (+12.2%), Anhui Province an increase of 5,000 tons (+11.6%), and Shandong Province an increase of 5,000 tons (+5.2%); however, Jiangxi Province experienced a decrease of 6,000 tons (-8.7%), and Jiangsu Province a decrease of 6,000 tons (-3.4%).
2. Pig iron production
In mid-December, among the six major regions, only the daily pig iron production of key enterprises in Northeast and East China increased compared to the previous ten-day period, while other regions experienced varying degrees of decline. Specifically:
In North China, daily pig iron production decreased by 10,000 tons (-1.6%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Of this, Hebei Province saw a decrease of 10,000 tons (-2.6%).
In Northwest China, daily pig iron production decreased by 1,000 tons (-0.9%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Of this, Shaanxi Province saw a decrease of 2,000 tons (-8.3%); additionally, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region saw an increase of 1,000 tons (+9.0%).
In the Southwest region, daily pig iron production decreased by 3,000 tons (-2.7%), a decrease of less than 5%. Specifically, Chongqing's daily production decreased by 2,000 tons (-13.4%), and Sichuan's daily production decreased by 1,000 tons (-1.6%).
In the Central-South region, daily pig iron production decreased by 33,000 tons (-13.0%), mainly due to a decrease of 31,000 tons (-64.3%) in Hubei Province and a decrease of 5,000 tons (-9.5%) in Hunan Province; however, Henan Province saw an increase of 2,000 tons (+4.6%) in daily production.
In Northeast China, daily pig iron production increased by 4,000 tons (+2.0%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Liaoning Province saw a daily increase of 3,000 tons (+2.1%), and Jilin Province saw a daily increase of 1,000 tons (+4.2%).
In East China, daily pig iron production increased by 9,000 tons (+1.9%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Shanghai saw a daily increase of 18,000 tons (+54.0%), Shandong Province saw an increase of 3,000 tons (+3.7%), and Anhui Province saw an increase of 2,000 tons (+3.9%); however, Jiangxi Province saw a decrease of 10,000 tons (-15.7%), and Jiangsu Province saw a decrease of 5,000 tons (-3.0%).
3. Steel production
In mid-December, among the six major regions, only the daily steel production of key enterprises in Northeast and North China increased compared to the previous ten-day period, while other regions experienced varying degrees of decline. Specifically:
Steel production in East China decreased by 12,000 tons per day (-2.2%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Jiangsu Province saw a decrease of 12,000 tons per day (-6.3%), and Jiangxi Province saw a decrease of 10,000 tons per day (-12.3%); however, Anhui Province saw an increase of 5,000 tons per day (+8.9%), and Shandong Province saw an increase of 5,000 tons per day (+6.4%).
In the Northwest region, daily steel production decreased by 0.1 million tons (-2.1%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Shaanxi Province saw a decrease of 0.3 million tons (-14.9%); however, Gansu Province saw an increase of 0.2 million tons (+8.0%).
In the Southwest region, daily steel production decreased by 0.1 million tons (-1.1%), with the decrease not exceeding 5%. Specifically, Chongqing Municipality saw a decrease of 0.1 million tons (-8.4%), and Yunnan Province saw a decrease of 0.1 million tons (-2.9%); however, Guizhou Province saw an increase of 0.1 million tons (+12.5%).
Steel production in the Central and Southern China region decreased by 28,000 tons per day (-9.8%), mainly due to a decrease of 26,000 tons per day (-53.2%) in Hubei Province, a decrease of 5,000 tons per day (-7.2%) in Guangdong Province, and a decrease of 2,000 tons per day (-2.5%) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; however, Hunan Province saw an increase of 5,000 tons per day (+9.6%).
Daily steel production in Northeast China increased by 15,000 tons (+10.1%), mainly due to a 15,000-ton increase in daily production in Liaoning Province (+12.7%).
Daily steel production in North China increased by 2,000 tons (+0.3%), with the increase not exceeding 5%. Specifically, daily production in Shanxi Province increased by 12,000 tons (+11.3%); however, daily production in Tianjin decreased by 8,000 tons (-11.4%), and daily production in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region decreased by 1,000 tons (-2.3%).
