On December 24, China National Offshore Oil Corporation announced a major new billion-ton discovery in the Bohai Sea's Neocenian shallow layer—the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oil field. This marks the seventh billion-ton oil field discovered consecutively since 2019 in the Bohai oil field, China's largest crude oil production base. The discovery further solidifies China's offshore oil and gas reserves and holds significant importance for safeguarding national energy security.

Located in the central Bohai Sea, the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oil field is another billion-ton lithologic oil field discovered in the region in recent years, following the major discovery of the Qinhuangdao 27-3 oil field. Testing indicates the field's single wells can produce approximately 370 tons of crude oil daily, demonstrating promising exploration prospects.

A CNOOC official stated that the company's enhanced exploration of shallow slope-zone hydrocarbon migration and accumulation patterns in the Neogene system, coupled with technological innovations, led to this major discovery. This breakthrough challenges the conventional understanding that hydrocarbons pass through slope zones without accumulation, highlighting the exploration potential of uplifted synclinal areas.
