According to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), EU passenger car market sales grew 5.3% to 677,786 units in August 2025. However, cumulative sales in the first eight months fell 0.1% year-on-year.
In the first eight months of this year, the EU's pure electric vehicle market share was 15.8%, still below the growth rate required for the transition phase, but up from the low baseline of 12.6% in the same period last year. Hybrid electric vehicle registrations continued to soar, accounting for 34.7% of the market share and remaining the preferred choice for EU consumers. Meanwhile, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles fell from 47.6% in the same period of 2024 to 37.5%.
Electric Vehicles
In the first eight months of this year, 1,132,603 new electric vehicles were registered in the EU, accounting for 15.8% of the EU market share. Three of the four largest EU markets (accounting for 62% of EU electric vehicle registrations) saw growth: Germany (+39.2%), Belgium (+14.4%), and the Netherlands (+5.1%). In stark contrast, France saw a 2% year-on-year decline.
The data also showed that new registrations of hybrid electric vehicles in the EU rose to 2,485,069, driven primarily by growth in four major markets: France (+30.5%), Spain (+29.3%), Germany (+10.1%), and Italy (+9.4%). Hybrid electric vehicles now account for 34.7% of the total EU market.
During the same period, plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations continued to grow, reaching 631,783 units. This was driven by sales growth in key markets such as Spain (+99.9%), Germany (+61.2%), and Italy (+62.6%). As a result, plug-in hybrid vehicles now account for 8.8% of EU car registrations, up from 6.9% previously.
Furthermore, August's year-over-year change alone shows a 30.2% increase in pure electric vehicles, a 14.1% increase in hybrid electric vehicles, and a 54.5% increase in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, maintaining strong growth for the sixth consecutive month.
Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles
In the first eight months of the year, EU gasoline vehicle registrations fell by 19.7%, with declines occurring in all major markets. France saw the largest drop, with registrations plummeting by 33.5%, followed by Germany (-25.2%), Italy (-17.6%), and Spain (-13.1%).
Year-to-date, 2,012,580 new car registrations were registered in the UK, with gasoline vehicle market share falling to 28.1% from 34.9% in the same period last year. Similarly, the diesel market also declined by 25.7%, resulting in a 9.4% market share in August 2025.
Furthermore, August's year-over-year change showed gasoline and diesel vehicle sales falling by 16.3% and 17.5%, respectively.
