According to foreign media reports, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, the current sharp decline in North American steel demand, including a large number of car factory shutdowns and other factors, has so far, ArcelorMittal has temporarily dismissed 467 employees in Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor in East Chicago 477 workers. At present, ArcelorMittal has laid off 944 employees in the Indiana area.
This layoff plan has long been reported before. ArcelorMittal has informed United Steelworkers Union on April 8 that the company plans to cut jobs in Indiana Harbor in eastern Chicago. Currently, the company has idled No. 3 blast furnace and No. 4 blast furnace in Indiana Port. The main reason for shutting down these blast furnaces is that due to the epidemic, a large number of automobile factories in the United States have stopped production or reduced production, and downstream demand for steel has been hit hard.
Indiana Harbor mainly provides sheet products for American automobile factories and home appliance manufacturers. The annual production capacity of finished products is about 6.4 million tons. In addition, the factory provides about 1 million tons of hot metal for the Riverdale factory every year.
