In May, the market for chloroform first fell and then rose, with a slight decline overall. According to the Commodity Market Analysis System of SunSirs, as of May 31, the price of bulk chloroform in Shandong Province was 2,275 RMB/ton, a slight decrease of 3.19% from 2,350 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month, and the low point during the cycle was 2,075 RMB/ton.

The price of raw material methanol had significantly declined, and the cost of chloroform declined; The peak season of downstream refrigerant R22 was gradually coming to an end, and the demand had insufficient support for chloroform; Methane chloride production fluctuated slightly, while the supply of chloroform was generally loose; In the first half of the month, demand weakened and prices declined. In the second half, prices rebounded due to the tight regional supply, but the overall industrial chain remained weak.

Analysis review

In May, there was a slight fluctuation in the start of the methane chloride plant, and the overall supply pressure continued.

In May, the price of raw material methanol plummeted significantly, and the cost support for chloroform weakened. According to the Commodity Market Analysis System of SunSirs, as of May 31, the spot price of methanol was 2,160 RMB/ton, a decrease of 10.87% from 2,423 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month.

The price of R22 remained stable in May, and as the peak season passed, overall support for chloroform weakened compared to the previous period. Overall, the total production quota for R22 in 2023 will be reduced by 19% to 181,800 tons.

Market outlook

According to methane chloride data analysts from SunSirs, the peak season ended, the overall demand support for chloroform was weakened, coupled with pressure on the supply side and a decline in cost, is expected the chloroform market will consolidate narrowly in the short term.
