The consultancy AgroConsult reported on May 23 that Brazil's second-crop corn production in 2022/23 will reach a record 102.4 million tons, higher than the 97.2 million tons forecast in March.
If the production forecast materializes, it would be 11 percent higher than last year's already large output, as favorable weather conditions in most regions boosted yield potential.
Analyst Andrea De Bastiani, who participated in the field survey, said Brazil's second-crop corn area was 16.7 million hectares, down from an initial estimate of 17.4 million hectares. Acreage has decreased in some states as farmers fear severe weather due to delays in planting. However, this year's second-crop corn area remained stable compared to the previous year, as a decrease in the Parana area was offset by an increase in the Mato Grosso area.
As the harvest date approaches, the yield of corn in many places in Brazil has increased, which will help to achieve a bumper harvest of second-crop corn.
The company expects Brazil's second crop corn yield to average 102.1 bags per hectare (60 kg per bag), up from 96.9 bags per hectare forecast in March and an 11% increase over the previous year's yield.
AgroConsult estimated Brazil's first-season corn production at 29.9 million tonnes, up 15% from a year earlier.
