Price trend

The prices of raw materials methanol and liquid chlorine continued to rise, while the cost of chloroform continued to support; Individual devices had a short shutdown, and the supply of chloroform fluctuated slightly; Downstream demand was weak, the market transaction atmosphere was flat, and the price of chloroform was basically stable.

This week (8.11-8.19), the price of raw material methanol slightly increased, the price of liquid chlorine significantly increased, and the cost center of dichloromethane increased. According to the Commodity Market Analysis System of SunSirs, as of August 19th, the spot price of methanol was 2,400 RMB/ton, an increase of 0.81% from last Friday's 2,380 RMB/ton. As of August 18th, the price of liquid chlorine in Shandong region was 400 RMB/ton, a significant increase from 100 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month, and the cost provided support for the market of dichloromethane.
Recently, the downstream refrigerant R22 was in the traditional off-season, and some enterprises conducted parking and maintenance, with stable prices and weak demand for chloroform. In addition, the total production quota of R22 had been reduced by 19% to 181,800 tons in 2023, and the demand support for chloroform has weakened in the medium to long term overall.
Market outlook
Methane chloride data analysts from SunSirs believe that although the high prices of methanol and liquid chlorine had support on the cost side, the overall demand for chloroform at the end of the peak season was weak. Overall, it is expected that the chloroform market will be adjusted to be weaker narrowly in the short term.
