SunSirs: 700-Million-Ton Dolomite Deposit Unearthed in Gansu Province

November 10 2025 10:00:41     China Geological Survey (lkhu)

Recently, a large magnesia-smelting dolomite deposit was successfully explored in Kongtong District, Pingliang City, Gansu Province. The total resource amount reaches 700 million tons, marking a major breakthrough in mineral exploration in this region.

It is reported that the deposit is located in the area of Zhuanmatai, Kongtong District. Since 2000, in order to accelerate the exploration and development of magnesium-smelting dolomite in Kongtong District, the finance departments at the provincial, municipal and county levels in Gansu Province jointly funded the general survey and detailed survey of the magnesium-smelting dolomite mine in Zhuanmatai, Kongtong District, which were completed in stages by the 146th Team of Gansu Coalfield Geology Bureau. This exploration has set a precedent for the collaborative ore-prospecting at the provincial, municipal and county levels in Gansu Province.

The exploration results show that the ore body occurs in the shallow marine carbonate rock strata of the Wangquankou Formation of the Jixian System in the Mesoproterozoic. The average grade of MgO is 20.67%, making it a high-quality dolomite ore for magnesium smelting. It is estimated that the cumulative amount of dolomite ore for magnesium smelting identified within the open-pit mining boundary exceeds 700 million tons, and there is also more than 300 million tons of dolomite for construction that can be comprehensively utilized. At the same time, this mine has the advantages of large scale, shallow burial, gentle dip angle, stable thickness, and convenience for open-pit mining.

It is understood that, in addition to being an important raw material for smelting metallic magnesium, this dolomite ore can also be used in industrial fields such as refractory materials, metallurgical fluxes, glass, and ceramics, with great potential for comprehensive resource utilization. The results of this detailed survey will provide core resource support for the development and utilization of dolomite ore resources for magnesium smelting in Gansu Province and the cultivation of the magnesium-based new material industry. It will significantly enhance the regional strategic resource security capacity and is of great significance for promoting local industrial upgrading and economic development.
