SunSirs: The Downward Support Was Strong, and the Price of Ethylene Glycol in September May Fluctuate Sideways

September 04 2025 08:47:23     SunSirs (John)

Ethylene glycol price trend in August

Ethylene glycol prices overall shifted upward in August. According to data from SunSirs, as of August 31, the average price of domestic oil-based ethylene glycol was 4,496.67 RMB/ton, up 1.39% from the average price of 4,435 RMB/ton on August 1.

In terms of port ethylene glycol, the average spot contract price of port ethylene glycol on August 29, 2025 was around 4,533 RMB/ton. The spot contract basis range last week was +56 to +58 RMB/ton. As of the close, the contract basis range for next week was +67 to +69 RMB/ton, and the contract basis range for late September was +70 to +72 RMB/ton.

Domestic coal-based polyester-grade ethylene glycol spot prices (bulk, tax included, self-pickup) were priced at 4,050-4,100 RMB/ton per truckload.

Foreign ethylene glycol, recent negotiated cargoes had been sold at around $531-534/ton.

Ethylene glycol prices may fluctuate sideways in September

Ethylene glycol prices are expected to fluctuate sideways in September for the following reasons:

Due to significant overseas supply losses, imports may decrease from September to October. Arrivals in early September were neutral to low, and visible inventories are expected to fall below 450,000 tons by early this week.

The domestic supply load was already at a high level, and new supply needed to pay attention to the restart of some units. Sichuan Zhengda Kai's new unit had been included in the production capacity base, and the production capacity base had been adjusted to 29.175 million tons. The total production capacity of ethylene glycol from synthesis gas was 10.96 million tons.

Downstream Market: Polyester loads rebounded at the end of the month, and downstream product processing margins widened across the board, though prices for some products declined. Inventory indices for all polyester products rose, indicating increased inventory pressure. The market expects polyester loads to average 91.5% in September, and rigid support had improved.

In summary, it is expected that the supply and demand of ethylene glycol may shift to a tight balance in September.
