SunSirs: EU Passenger Car Sales Decline 1.9% to 5.58 Million Units in the First Half of 2025
July 25 2025 14:41:52     SunSirs (Selena)According to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), passenger car sales in the EU automotive market in June 2025 decreased by 7.3% year-on-year to 1.01 million units, compared to 1.09 million units in the same period last year. This also indicates that the global economic environment is full of challenges for automobile manufacturers.
In the first half of 2025, the cumulative sales of passenger cars in the EU automotive market decreased by 1.9% year-on-year to 5.58 million units, compared to 5.68 million units in the same period last year. Pure electric vehicles account for 15.6% of the EU market share, an increase from the low baseline of 12.5% in the same period of 2024, but still far from reaching the level required for the transition phase. The registration volume of hybrid electric vehicles continues to soar, accounting for 34.8% of the market share, and remains the preferred power type for EU consumers. At the same time, the total market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles decreased from 48.2% in the same period last year to 37.8%.
Electric vehicle
In the first half of the year, the sales of pure electric vehicles reached 869271 units, accounting for 15.6% of the EU market share. Among the four major markets in the European Union, three markets (accounting for over 60% of EU electric vehicle registrations) achieved growth: Germany (+35.1%), Belgium (+19.5%), and the Netherlands (+6.1%). In sharp contrast, the registration of electric vehicles in France has decreased by 6.4%.
The data also shows that the number of new registrations of hybrid electric vehicles in the EU has increased to 1942762, mainly due to growth in four major markets: France (+34.1%), Spain (+32.8%), Italy (+10%), and Germany (+9.9%). Hybrid electric vehicles currently account for 34.8% of the EU market share.
In addition, the registered number of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles reached 469410. This is due to sales growth in major markets such as Germany (+55.1%), Spain (+82.5%), and Italy (+56.3%). Therefore, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles currently account for 8.4% of the total number of EU car registrations, up from 6.9% as of June 2024.
Looking at the year-on-year changes in June alone, pure electric vehicles only grew by 7.8%, hybrid electric vehicles only grew by 6.1%, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles grew strongly for the fourth consecutive month, with an increase of 41.6%.
Gasoline and diesel vehicles
In the first half of the year, the registration volume of gasoline vehicles decreased by 21.2%, and all major markets experienced a decline. France experienced the largest decline, with a 33.7% drop in registration volume, followed by Germany (-27.8%), Italy (-17.2%), and Spain (-13.4%).
Data shows that the market share of gasoline vehicles has decreased from 35.4% to 28.4%, reaching 1,585,357 units. Similarly, the diesel car market also decreased by 28.1%, resulting in a diesel car market share of 9.4%.
Looking at the year-on-year changes in June alone, the gasoline and diesel car markets decreased by 25.4% and 34.1% respectively.
