SunSirs: Russia's Wheat Harvest in 2023 is Predicted to be 86 Million Tons

March 06 2023 09:00:34

SovEcon, a consultancy, estimated that Russia's wheat output in 2023 would be 86 million tons, which was in line with earlier expectations, despite the adverse weather in January.

SovEcon experts reminded that the temperature in early January was higher than usual, which led to the melting of snow in many areas. Subsequently, the temperature dropped significantly below the normal level, causing the crops in the southern part of the central region of Russia and the Volga River basin to face the risk of freezing to death. However, the duration of this cold current was not long enough to cause major damage to crops. The root system is probably not damaged. If the spring weather is appropriate and a large amount of fertilizer is applied, the crops are likely to recover.

SovEcon said that farmers in some areas were not satisfied with the condition of winter wheat fields because the crops had turned yellow. However, the root system is likely not to be damaged, so it is likely to recover when the weather is suitable and a large amount of fertilizer is applied.

Recently, many institutions have lowered their expectations for this year's Russian wheat production because of the recent bad weather conditions.

SovEcon warned that the growing shortage of water in southern Russia posed a threat to the production prospects. In the past three months, the precipitation in this area is only 40-80% of the normal level. In a month, shortly before the start of the growing season, the region will need sufficient precipitation.
