According to the General Administration of Customs on January 14, China's total import and export value of goods reached CNY 45.47 trillion in 2025, marking a 3.8% year-on-year increase and setting a new record high. This growth has been sustained for nine consecutive years since 2017. Specifically, exports amounted to CNY 26.99 trillion, up 6.1% year-on-year; while imports reached CNY 18.48 trillion, up 0.5% year-on-year, solidifying China's position as the world's second-largest import market for the 17th consecutive year.

In 2025, China imported 578 million tons of crude oil, a 4.4% increase from the previous year; natural gas imports totaled 128 million tons, down 2.8% year-on-year; refined oil imports amounted to 42.418 million tons, a 12% decrease; coal imports will reach 490 million tons, down 9.6% year-on-year; iron ore imports will reach 1.259 billion tons, up 1.8% year-on-year. Additionally, imports of plastics in primary forms will reach 26.84 million tons, down 7.4% year-on-year; imports of unwrought copper and copper products will reach 5.321 million tons, down 6.4% year-on-year; imports of mechanical and electrical products reached CNY 7.41 trillion, up 5.7% year-on-year.

2025 marks the conclusion of China's 14th Five-Year Plan period. During this period, China's cumulative import and export volume of goods exceeded CNY 200 trillion, representing a 40% increase compared to the 13th Five-Year Plan period, with an average annual growth rate of 7.1%. China's share of global imports remained around 10%, with cumulative imports exceeding CNY90 trillion over the five years. Its share of global exports stayed above 14%. The latest international data shows China has become a major trading partner for over 160 countries and regions, an increase of more than 20 compared to 2020.
