SunSirs: Global Sugar Supply Outlook Shifts; White Sugar Prices Remain Firm with Volatility

Expectations for the global sugar supply-demand balance have shifted; institutions have revised their forecasts from an earlier surplus to a tight balance or even a slight deficit. International raw sugar prices are finding support from weather conditions and production forecasts. Domestically, the market reflects a "strong expectations vs. weak reality" dynamic: while international prices provide a floor, high domestic inventories limit upside potential, resulting in a generally firm yet volatile trend for white sugar.
International Market: Supply Outlook Shifts; Weather Concerns Boost Prices
Disruptions in major producing countries lead to downward revisions in production forecasts
Rainfall in Brazil's Center-South region has disrupted sugarcane crushing schedules and reduced the proportion of cane allocated to sugar production, causing a year-on-year decline in sugar output. Uncertainty surrounds India's export policies. Meanwhile, drought conditions in Thailand and the EU have hindered sugarcane growth. Consequently, multiple institutions have lowered their global sugar production forecasts for the new season, shifting the global outlook from surplus to tight balance.
Energy sector support
High crude oil prices have increased the incentive for Brazilian producers to divert sugarcane toward ethanol production rather than sugar, further reinforcing the price floor for raw sugar.
Risk: If weather conditions improve and production in major countries recovers, the expectation of supply contraction could be quickly invalidated, creating downward pressure on international prices.
Domestic Market: International Prices Provide a Floor; Inventory Pressures Limit Gains
Support: Rising ICE raw sugar prices have increased import costs, providing cost support for domestic white sugar spot and futures prices. With the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday approaching, the food, beverage, and confectionery sectors are entering a seasonal stocking period, leading to a month-on-month improvement in essential downstream demand.
Pressure: Domestic industrial inventories remain relatively high, and the pace of sugar sales has fallen short of expectations. Downstream buyers are focusing on essential procurement, with limited willingness for large-scale, proactive restocking. Additionally, as the new crushing season approaches, the anticipated arrival of new-crop sugar is capping upside potential, resulting in domestic price gains that lag behind those in international markets.
Market Outlook
White sugar prices are caught in a tug-of-war between expectations of tightening overseas supply and the reality of high domestic inventories. Until production data from major producing countries clearly refutes the projected output decline, downside potential remains limited, and the market is expected to maintain a firm yet volatile trend; however, conditions for a sustained, sharp rally are currently lacking.
