SunSirs: Rise in Grain Shipping Costs from South America to China

September 02 2026 09:13:56     SunSirs (Selena)

For the week ending August 27, 2026, ocean freight rates for grain shipments from South America to China increased. Freight rates for 54,000–59,000-ton vessels from the Port of Santos, Brazil, to China rose by $1.50 to $55.75 per ton, while rates from Brazil's northern coast to China rose by $1.50 to $59.50 per ton. Rates for 56,000–60,000-ton deep-water vessels from the Port of Rosario, Argentina, to China increased by $1.50 to $56.50 per ton.

The $1.50-per-ton increase in grain shipping rates from major South American ports (such as Santos and Rosario) to China has directly raised the landed cost of imported grain. This provides some support for domestic grain spot and futures prices, representing a moderately positive factor.

Brazil and Argentina are key sources of soybean imports for my country; the rise in shipping costs has increased the landed cost of imported soybeans, providing bullish support for domestic soybean spot and futures prices, though the overall impact is moderate.

South America serves as a supplementary source for my country's corn imports; the rise in shipping costs has slightly increased the cost of imported corn but offers only weak support for domestic corn prices, representing a minor positive factor.
