SunSirs: The Acetic Acid Market Recently Saw a Strong Upward Trend

August 26 2026 14:00:02     SunSirs (John)

The domestic acetic acid market has recently seen a strong upward trend; rising prices for the feedstock methanol have provided robust cost support, and market participants are maintaining a bullish outlook. Prices have fluctuated unevenly across regions due to variations in inventory levels and downstream purchasing demand, though the overall market performance remains strong. As of August 25, the average market price for acetic acid stood at 3,220 RMB/ton—an increase of 143.33 RMB/ton (or 4.66%) from the 3,076.67 RMB/ton recorded on August 17.

Strong cost-side support: The methanol market has trended upward amidst fluctuations, providing favorable cost-side support for acetic acid; this has bolstered market sentiment regarding price increases, prompting acetic acid producers to raise their quotes.

Low inventory levels on the supply side: Although the operating rate for acetic acid has risen slightly, overall corporate inventories remain low. With some producers reporting smooth shipments and spot supplies tightening, market sentiment is bullish, driving prices upward.

Demand-side support remained decent: downstream purchasing is primarily driven by immediate needs, though order concentration in certain regions has kept corporate quotes firm. While demand in Central China is relatively weak due to the traditional off-season—limiting the extent of price increases—the strong price trends of downstream products like acetic anhydride and ethyl acetate provide reasonable support on the demand side.

Market Outlook

In the short term, the acetic acid market continues to show underlying strength, though regional trends have diverged due to varying downstream demand and inventory levels. Looking ahead, as operating rates rise and market supply is expected to increase, the market is likely to undergo a period of fluctuation and consolidation; specific attention should be paid to supply dynamics and the pace of downstream uptake.
