SunSirs: Driven by Costs, Polyamide Filament Prices Rose Sharply, Though Downstream Demand Saw Limited Follow-Through
August 24 2026 15:08:22     SunSirs (John)
Last week (August 17-21), the domestic Polyamide filament market saw prices trend upward—driven by costs—while downstream demand remained limited. The transmission of upstream raw material price increases was sluggish; Polyamide PA6 chip prices held firm at high levels, providing strong cost support. Although prices for various Polyamide filament products surged during the week, end-market purchasing was restricted to immediate needs, and pressure to move inventory persisted; thus, while the overall market tone was bullish, it lacked sustained support from demand.
Upstream raw materials: Caprolactam and PA6 chips were trading at high levels, providing solid cost support.
Last week (August 17-21), Polyamide raw material prices remained generally high; the market price of caprolactam stayed firm, providing strong support for downstream PA6 chips, which also maintained high price levels. However, the transmission of rising upstream raw material costs to the downstream spinning sector was relatively slow; the gradual downstream shift of cost pressures became the primary driver behind the recent rise in Polyamide filament prices.
Supported by strong cost factors, chip manufacturers have maintained firm quotes, keeping raw material procurement costs high for spinning plants. Driven by production cost pressures, filament producers are keen to raise prices; however, due to limited downstream acceptance, there have been no sustained, sharp price surges. The market initially adopted a "wait-and-see" approach with stable pricing, before implementing widespread price hikes toward the end of the week.
Market Trends for Polyamide Filament Varieties: Concentrated Price Hikes and Synchronized Upward Movement Across Categories
Based on spot market quotes from last week (August 17-21), prices for Polyamide DTY, POY, and FDY initially remained stable but saw a concentrated upward adjustment on August 21, with the magnitude of the increases varying across different varieties.
1. Polyamide DTY (Jiangsu 70D/24F, semi-dull, premium grade): Quoted at 16,120 RMB/ton at the start of the week and raised to 16,420 RMB/ton by the weekend, marking a weekly increase of 1.86%;
2. Polyamide POY (Jiangsu 86D/24F, semi-dull, premium grade): Quoted at 14,000 RMB/ton at the start of the week and rose to 14,350 RMB/ton by the weekend, with a weekly increase of 2.50%—the largest gain among the three varieties;
3. Polyamide FDY (Fujian 40D/12F, semi-dull, premium grade): Quoted at 16,500 RMB/ton at the start of the week and rose to 16,825 RMB/ton by the weekend, a weekly increase of 1.97%.
Market quotes remained stable for most of the week as enterprises adopted a wait-and-see approach, with price hikes being widely implemented towards the weekend. Supported by high chip costs, filament manufacturers maintained a firm stance on pricing, and market trading activity was robust.
Downstream demand side: No significant improvement; purchasing was driven primarily by essential needs, and there was pressure on sales/shipments.
There has been no significant improvement in downstream weaving demand, and the market has seen no large-scale restocking activity; downstream factories largely adhere to a "buy-as-needed" approach, showing little willingness to build up significant inventories.
Although rising raw material costs have pushed up filament quotes, downstream acceptance of high prices remains limited, making it difficult for spinning enterprises to move stock. A tug-of-war is playing out between costs and demand: upstream costs provide upward price support, while downstream demand curbs the potential for increases, preventing any sustained, sharp surge in the market.
Market Outlook
In the short term, Polyamide 6 chips remain at high price levels, providing strong cost-side support for Polyamide filament and sustaining manufacturers' determination to maintain prices. However, the key constraint lies downstream; unless end-market weaving demand rebounds effectively, downstream purchasing limited to immediate needs will cap the potential for filament price increases.
Polyamide filament prices are expected to fluctuate with an upward bias in the near term. The extent of any price movement will depend on ongoing monitoring of fluctuations in raw material costs (caprolactam and Polyamide 6 chips) and the volume of downstream weaving orders.
