SunSirs: Converging Demand Across Multiple Regions Poised to Drive Continued Strength in the Potash Market

July 24 2026 15:06:17

According to the latest forecasts from Argus, global potash demand is projected to reach 75.8 million tons by 2026, underpinned by solid industry fundamentals. While global demand remained steady in the first half of the year, the second half is witnessing a convergence of peak agricultural fertilizer demand across key regions such as Asia and the Americas. This surge is driven by multiple favorable factors, including the implementation of industrial support policies, the optimization of crop planting structures, and weather conditions that necessitate fertilizer application to ensure stable yields. This synchronized demand across regions is expected to propel the global potash market upward, providing strong support for the industry's performance throughout the year.

As a core hub for global potash consumption, Asia boasts a solid foundation of essential demand and robust growth momentum; its projected 2026 demand of 33.6 million tons—accounting for 44% of the global total—makes it the central pillar of market stability. China and India anchor the market, while Southeast Asia contributes significant incremental growth.

As the world's largest potash-consuming region, China is projected to require 18.7 million tonnes in 2026, representing over half of Asia's total demand. In the second half of the year, China’s autumn plowing and sowing operations are in full swing, driving a concentrated stocking phase for autumn fertilizers. Operating rates among compound fertilizer manufacturers are steadily recovering, and the essential demand for potash procurement continues to materialize, solidifying the foundation for the market's stable operation.

India effectively anchors the price floor for potash in Asia through consistent import procurement. With a projected 2026 demand of 4.1 million tons, India plays a particularly pivotal role in supporting the market during the second half of the year. In May, India finalized an annual long-term import contract at $383 per ton, securing core supplies to guarantee domestic availability. The second half of the year coincides with the critical crop growth period of the monsoon season; major crops such as cotton, sugarcane, and rice enter their peak phase for top-dressing, resulting in a concentrated release of essential demand for agricultural fertilizer. Southeast Asia stands as a key growth market for global potash; the region's total annual demand is projected to reach 8.27 million tonnes in 2026, with a significant portion of this growth materializing in the second half of the year. On the policy front, Indonesia fully implemented its B50 biodiesel mandate starting in July, while Malaysia simultaneously moved to raise its biodiesel blending rate to 15%; these two policies are directly driving a continued expansion of oil palm cultivation areas in the region. As oil palm is a potassium-intensive cash crop, the expansion of planting scale is fueling steady, long-term growth in the fundamental demand for potash. Concurrently, the second half of the year marks the peak period for supplemental fertilization during the rainy season in Southeast Asia. Coupled with the impact of El Niño, there is heightened demand for enhancing crop resilience, quality, and yields, alongside a strong willingness among farmers to apply additional potash, resulting in impressive growth in regional demand.

The Americas market benefits from the staggered fertilizer procurement schedules of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, ensuring a continuous relay of demand throughout the second half of the year. Total regional potash demand for 2026 is projected at 27.3 million tons, comprising 17 million tons for Latin America and 10.3 million tons for North America. Brazil serves as the primary demand driver in the Americas, with an annual demand of 14.3 million tons, firmly establishing it as the world's second-largest single-country consumer market. The second half of the year marks the start of Brazil's peak soybean planting season; given the relatively low pace of early-season potash procurement by farmers, there is significant room for concentrated restocking, which will continue to drive regional potash consumption growth. According to the latest USDA estimates, Brazil's soybean planting area for the 2026/27 season is expected to reach 50 million hectares—an increase of 1.5 million hectares over the previous season—with this expansion likely to directly boost potash demand.

Meanwhile, the United States enters its routine fertilization cycle for autumn field crops and cash crops; end-user demand is being released as needed, creating complementary consumption that supports the domestic fertilizer market and provides a solid foundation for the broader Americas market.

Overall, the global potash market in the second half of 2026 is characterized by a pattern of "overlapping peak seasons across multiple regions" and "dual drivers of policy mandates and fundamental demand." With solid baseline demand from China and India, leading growth in Southeast Asia, and peak-season restocking in the Americas, demand across major core markets is converging; this suggests that the projected increase in potash demand for the year will likely materialize steadily, driving the industry toward stable and positive growth.
