Macroeconomics
1. [Excavators] According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association, major excavator manufacturers sold a total of 24,794 excavators in May 2026, a year-on-year increase of 36.2%. Domestic sales accounted for 11,628 units (up 38.6% year-on-year), while exports totaled 13,166 units (up 34.2% year-on-year).
2. [Automobiles] According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), retail sales of passenger cars nationwide in May totaled 1.51 million units, down 22.1% year-on-year but up 9.2% month-on-month. Of this total, retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 950,000 units—a year-on-year decline of 7.5% but a month-on-month increase of 12.4%—with a retail penetration rate of 62.9% within the overall domestic passenger vehicle market.
Steel
1. [Galvanized Sheet] On June 8, 2026, the total trading volume across 154 surveyed galvanized steel enterprises nationwide was 15,723 tonnes, a decrease of 379 tonnes (2.35%) from the previous trading day. The region recording the largest decline was South China, where volume fell by 170 tonnes (11.97%).
2. [Steel Products] On June 8, Shougang Changgang adjusted its prices for construction steel as follows: prices for HRB400E rebar remained stable (Φ20mm rebar at 3,150 RMB/ton); prices for HPB300 wire rods were lowered by 40 RMB/ton (Φ8-12mm high-speed wire rod at 3,400 RMB/ton); and prices for HRB400E coiled rebar were lowered by 40 RMB/ton (Φ8-10mm coiled rebar at 3,400 RMB/ton). All prices are for cash transactions and include tax.
3. [Iron & Steel] Last week, the average capacity utilization rate of 94 independent electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills nationwide stood at 62.42%, up 0.77 percentage points week-on-week; the average operating rate was 77.36%, up 1.39 percentage points week-on-week.
