SunSirs: International Phosphate Fertilizer Market: Price Fluctuations and Supply-Demand Game

May 25 2026 09:03:12      JLCNET  (lkhu)

Recently, the international phosphorus fertilizer market has shown a complex and changeable situation, with frequent price fluctuations and increasingly fierce competition between supply and demand in different regions.

In the Indian market, the large bidding event for the Indian IPL has become the focus of the market. The IPL successfully purchased more than 1.3 million tons of DAP at a price lower than most predictions, a result that exceeded market expectations. Originally, the IPL requested to purchase 1.2 million tons of DAP, but received nearly twice the quotations, and the final counteroffer price was set at $930 - 935/ton cfr. At the same time, the IPL's counteroffer price for TSP was $710/ton cfr, which is lower than the current North African FOB price. Although India has not completely favored TSP, only considering it as a last resort when there is a shortage of P2O5, negotiations with OCP for the purchase of DAP and TSP are still ongoing. After this purchase by India, there is still a demand for purchases in the future, which will have a lasting impact on the international phosphatic fertilizer market.

Every move in the Indian market not only affects itself but also extends to neighboring countries. Pakistan, after seeing the purchasing price of India, purchased DAP from Saudi Arabia at a lower price, which shows the existence of price competition among the region.

Phosphate fertilizer markets have shown varying performances across different regions globally. In East Asia and Oceania, the production rate of Chinese phosphate fertilizer manufacturers has declined. China DAP and MAP prices remain stable due to limited liquidity, and some MAP producers have suspended quotations due to a decrease in demand from NPK manufacturers. China demand for MAP and DAP in Australia is at a seasonal low, and import data also shows a decrease in purchase volume. However, the bidding results of India IPL have provided some support to prices in the surrounding regions.

In Southeast Asia, the tender from India's IPL has impacted regional prices, traders said, and the DAP offer from Saudi Arabia is in line with the IPL tender price. Imported assessment prices have increased due to global supply tightness and rising production costs, but China prices have lagged, limiting the low-end assessment of imported prices.

Middle East and North Africa region, Saudi Arabia has won the DAP tender in IPL at a price of above $900/ton. Saudi Arabia sold 30,000 tons of DAP to India, while Pakistan also purchased DAP from Saudi Arabia. However, due to the tense situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the transportation of some goods was blocked, which also affected the regional supply.

In the Americas, MAP prices in Brazil remain stable on the basis of offers from traders and importers, but are mostly nominal due to the stagnation of market activity following the outbreak of the Middle East war and the subsequent rise in phosphate prices. Phosphate purchasing in the Brazilian soybean growing areas is mixed, with farmers facing credit difficulties and fertilizer prices exceeding expectations, leading to a slow pace of phosphate purchasing. In the US barge market, prices have increased相应ly due to reduced shipments to Latin America and a decrease in China production.

In addition, the relationship between the prices of sulfur and phosphates is also worth noting. Phosphate producers currently have sufficient sulfur to maintain production, but the product selling price cannot support the continued purchase of sulfur, and if this impasse continues, the possibility of production cuts increases, which may further affect global phosphate fertilizer supply and price trends.

Overall, the recent international phosphatic fertilizer market has shown a complex and changing pattern in terms of price, supply and demand, and trade, with each regional market influencing one another, and the future market trend is still full of uncertainties.
