According to Argus, an international energy and commodity price assessment agency, on December 18, 2025, India's urea sales volume this month may approach 6 million tons, which will set a new monthly sales record.
As a traditional peak consumption month in the Rabi season (October to March of the following year), sales in December got off to a strong start. The latest provisional data shows that India's domestic urea production remains relatively stable, with an average monthly output of around 2.6 million tons.
In December 2024, urea sales in India reached 5.2 million tons. The previous highest monthly sales record was 5.4 million tons in July this year.
Data shows that India's urea inventory was approximately 6.3 million tonnes in mid-December, down from 7.1 million tonnes at the beginning of the month. The strong sales data this month is likely a key driver behind the early release of a tender by National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), India's importer and supplier, on December 16. The tender, which closes on January 2, 2026, seeks to procure 1.5 million tonnes of urea with a delivery deadline of February 20, 2026.
India is typically the world's largest importer of urea, and its regularly held tenders attract significant attention in the international urea market. It is understood that so far this year, India has procured 9.23 million tons of urea through tenders.
