China Accelerates Green Transformation of Express Packaging, with Over 2.888 Million Packaging-Related Enterprises Currently Operating
Recently, the State Post Bureau's press conference revealed that electronic waybills and reusable transit bags have achieved near-universal adoption. Packaging layers and bag thickness have been reduced by over 50%, tape width decreased by 25%, and intelligent packing algorithms cut material consumption by nearly 20%. The reuse rate for same-city express packaging has reached 10%.
Regarding packaging recycling, over 800 million cardboard boxes are recycled and reused annually. Four enterprises, including the postal service, are piloting reusable packaging in scenarios like fresh produce cold chains and government document delivery across more than 20 cities to promote resource circulation.
Concurrently, modern information technology is accelerating green and low-carbon development. Sorting centers are undergoing intelligent upgrades, with photovoltaic power generation and smart sorting systems rapidly deployed. Hydrogen-powered and clean-energy vehicles are widely adopted. Currently, the postal industry has installed photovoltaic panels across 4.48 million square meters, operates over 1,000 green sorting centers and 12,500 green service outlets, and maintains a fleet exceeding 75,000 new and clean-energy vehicles.
Data from Tianyancha Professional Edition shows that China currently has over 2.888 million active packaging-related enterprises. Among these, approximately 459,000 new enterprises were registered in 2025 alone. The trend in enterprise registrations indicates that the number of packaging-related enterprises has grown annually over the past five years, peaking in 2024.
Regionally, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces lead in packaging-related enterprises, with over 474,000, 393,000, and 309,000 registered entities respectively. Shanghai and Shandong follow in the rankings.
