SunSirs: The Market Price of Chloroform Was Rising

Recently (December 1-22), the chloroform market in Shandong province has seen an upward trend. According to SunSirs' commodity price analysis system, as of December 22nd, theprice of bulk chloroform in Shandong was 1,966 RMB/ton, a 3.51% increase compared to 1,900 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month. The raw materials methanol and liquid chlorine still provided some support. Downstream production remained low, dragging down the chloroform market. The low operating rate of methane chloride production also contributed to the overall upward trend in chloroform prices.

Market Analysis

Recently (December 1-22), the operating rate of the Jinling methane chloride plant slightly decreased to around 81%.

Recently, methanol prices have risen slightly, while liquid chlorine prices have remained largely stable, providing cost support for chloroform. According to the SunSirs' commodity market analysis system, as of December 22nd, the spot price of methanol was 2,140 RMB/ton, a 0.71% increase compared to 2,125 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month. As of December 22nd, the accepted price for liquid chlorine in tank trucks in Shandong province was around 100 RMB/ton, remaining stable compared to the beginning of the month.

Downstream demand for refrigerant R22 remained weak, reducing the support for chloroform demand. The continued decrease in R22 quotas in 2025 had a negative impact on chloroform. In 2013, China's baseline production quota for second-generation refrigerants was 426,400 tons. After several reductions, this was reduced to 163,600 tons in 2025. Of this, the production quotas for R22, R142b, and R141b will be 149,100 tons, 3,400 tons, and 9,200 tons respectively.

Market Forecast:

According to SunSirs' methane chloride data analyst, the demand for chloroform was weak; however, cost and supply provided some support. Overall, it is expected that the chloroform market will mainly fluctuate within a narrow range in the near future.
