SunSirs: China's National Bureau of Statistics: Nationwide Grain Harvest to Reach Record Levels in 2025

December 15 2025 09:26:26

According to a report released on the 12th by China's National Bureau of Statistics website, Wei Fenghua, Director of the Rural Statistics Department, provided an analysis of grain production trends. By 2025, the nation's grain output is projected to reach 1.42975 trillion jin (approximately 724.5 million metric tons), marking an increase of 16.75 billion jin (approximately 890,000 metric tons) compared to the previous year—a growth rate of 1.2%. This production level will remain stable above 1.4 trillion jin.

I. Grain Sown Area Increases by 1.348 Million Mu, Up 0.1%

In 2025, the state focused on improving the policy support system for grain production. It continued to raise the minimum purchase prices for wheat and early-maturing indica rice, refined various subsidy policies, expanded the coverage of full-cost insurance and crop income insurance for major grain varieties, launched inter-provincial horizontal benefit compensation between grain-producing and consuming regions under central coordination, and increased support for major grain-producing counties. These measures fully mobilized farmers' enthusiasm for grain cultivation and local governments' commitment to grain production. Local governments strictly implement joint Party and government responsibility for food security, strengthen farmland protection and quality enhancement, and stabilize grain planting area through multiple measures including optimizing crop structure, advancing comprehensive land improvement, and increasing reclamation of abandoned farmland. The national grain planting area reached 1.791 billion mu, an increase of 1.348 million mu or 0.1% over the previous year, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth.

(1) Corn acreage increased significantly, while rice and wheat acreage remained largely stable. In 2025, the national grain crop planting area reached 1.509 billion mu, an increase of 2.413 million mu or 0.2% compared to the previous year. Specifically: - Corn planting area reached 674 million mu, up 3.301 million mu or 0.5% year-on-year, marking the third consecutive year of substantial growth. - Rice planting area stood at 435 million mu, up 79,000 mu or slightly increased year-on-year. - Wheat planting area totaled 354 million mu, down 83,000 mu but essentially unchanged year-on-year.

(2) Slight Decline in Legume and Tuber Crops. In 2025, the national legume planting area was 177 million mu, a decrease of 625,000 mu or 0.4% from the previous year. Among these, soybean planting area was 154 million mu, a decrease of 990,000 mu or 0.6% from the previous year, yet it remained stable above 150 million mu for four consecutive years. The national potato crop area was 105 million mu, down 440,000 mu or 0.4% from the previous year.

II. Grain yield per mu increased by 4.4 kilograms, up 1.1%

In 2025, although droughts, floods, and prolonged rainy weather affected grain production in some areas, most agricultural regions nationwide experienced favorable light, temperature, and water conditions, with overall meteorological conditions conducive to the growth and yield formation of grain crops. Localities further expanded the implementation scale of grain yield enhancement projects and intensified the promotion of technologies such as rational densification and integrated water-fertilizer management, driving continuous improvements in grain yield levels. The national grain yield reached 399.1 kilograms per mu, an increase of 4.4 kilograms per mu compared to the previous year, representing a 1.1% growth.

(1) Corn and rice yields increased, while wheat yield remained stable. In 2025, the national cereal yield was 437.4 kilograms per mu, an increase of 4.6 kilograms per mu compared to the previous year, representing a 1.1% growth. Specifically:

- Corn yield: 446.7 kg/mu, up 7.2 kg or 1.6% year-on-year

- Rice yield: 480.4 kg/mu, up 3.4 kg or 0.7% year-on-year

- Wheat yield: 396.0 kg/mu, unchanged from the previous year

(2) Yields of legumes and tubers both increased. In 2025, the national legume yield reached 135.4 kilograms per mu, an increase of 2.2 kilograms per mu or 1.6% over the previous year. Among these, soybean yield was 135.9 kilograms per mu, up by 2.5 kilograms or 1.9% year-on-year. The national tuber yield was 292.3 kilograms per mu, an increase of 2.7 kilograms or 0.9% over the previous year.

III. Total Grain Output Increased by 16.75 Billion Jin, Up 1.2%

In 2025, the national summer grain output reached 299.49 billion jin, a decrease of 290 million jin compared to the previous year; the early rice output reached 57.03 billion jin, an increase of 680 million jin compared to the previous year. Nationwide, the autumn grain planting area remained stable with a slight increase. Production in most agricultural regions was generally stable. Combined with the ongoing adjustment of the planting structure, the area planted with high-yield crops like corn increased significantly, driving the growth in autumn grain output. In the Huang-Huai-Hai region, prolonged rainy weather during the harvest period caused mold damage to some crops, impacting grain production. Excluding yield losses due to mold damage, the national autumn grain output reached 107.323 billion jin, an increase of 1.636 billion jin or 1.5% compared to the previous year. The total annual grain output reached 1,429.75 billion jin, an increase of 16.75 billion jin or 1.2% over the previous year.

(1) Corn and rice production increased, while wheat output remained largely unchanged. In 2025, national grain output reached 132.041 billion jin, up 1.584 billion jin or 1.2% from the previous year. Corn production accounted for 60.247 billion jin, an increase of 1.264 billion jin or 2.1% year-on-year, serving as the primary driver of grain output growth. Rice production reached 418.08 billion jin, up 3.01 billion jin or 0.7% year-on-year. Wheat production stood at 280.14 billion jin, slightly down by 0.05 billion jin or essentially unchanged.

(2) Legume and tuber production showed steady growth. In 2025, national legume production reached 47.86 billion jin, an increase of 610 million jin or 1.3% over the previous year. Among these, soybean production amounted to 41.81 billion jin, up by 520 million jin or 1.3%. National tuber production totaled 61.47 billion jin, an increase of 310 million jin or 0.5%.

(3) Grain output increased in most provinces, with major producing regions playing a significant role. Among China's 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), 29 saw increased grain production. Driven by factors such as crop structure adjustments and favorable climatic conditions, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang collectively increased grain output by 11.47 billion jin, accounting for nearly 70% of the national increase.

In 2025, China's grain output remained stable at over 1.4 trillion jin, ensuring that the nation firmly holds its own food bowl. This achievement has laid a solid foundation for accelerating agricultural and rural modernization and advancing comprehensive rural revitalization, provided strong support for consolidating and expanding the upward momentum of economic recovery and promoting sustained high-quality development, and made positive contributions to stabilizing the global grain market and safeguarding world food security.
