SunSirs: China's Mulberry Silkworm Cocoon Production Accounts for About 75% of Global Output, Raw Silk Exports Exceed 60% of Worldwide Total

December 01 2025 16:35:36

According to the People's Daily, China currently produces about 75% of the world's mulberry silkworm cocoons and exports more than 60% of global raw silk, with the industry's competitive edge continuously strengthening.

Recently, the Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with relevant departments, issued a notice on advancing the “East Silk, West Consolidation” initiative for the cocoon and silk industry. This initiative aims to promote the phased transfer of the industry to central and western regions, optimize regional industrial layout, enhance overall development quality and efficiency, and build new competitive advantages on the international stage.

Looking back at the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the silk industry has achieved remarkable progress.

The industrial foundation has been strengthened. During this period, China's annual mulberry silkworm cocoon output averaged 744,000 tons, marking an 11% increase compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period. Mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing have flourished in some central and western regions, becoming distinctive local industries.

International reputation has continuously improved. The “China Silk” brand has been enhanced, steadily expanding its share in international markets. In 2024, China's silk product exports reached US$1.44 billion, marking an increase of over 30% compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period, with exports reaching approximately 120 countries and regions worldwide.
