The Proposal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development points out that new industries and future industries should be cultivated and strengthened.

Graphene, known as the "King of New Materials", is expected to see further development during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period.

At the recently held 2025 (12th) China International Graphene Innovation Conference, industry experts stated that the global graphene application market size continues to grow, and China's graphene industry is also showing a thriving trend.

According to the "Guiding catalogue (2024 Edition)" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, graphene heat dissipation materials, graphene electric heating films prepared by coating method, graphene thermal conductivity composites, graphene modified foaming materials, graphene modified lubricating materials, graphene explosion-proof electric heating film materials, etc., are listed in it. In recent years, the scale of China's graphene industry has gradually expanded. Industry data show that at present, the number of patent applications in the field of graphene in China has reached 2.8 million, accounting for more than 80% of the total number of global applications. As of the end of 2024, China's graphene material production capacity has exceeded 15,000 tons/year, accounting for about 53% of the global total, becoming the world's largest graphene raw material production and manufacturing base.

Li Yichun, a member of the National New Materials Industry Expert Consulting Committee and the chairman of the China Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Strategy Alliance, said that at present, China has initially built a preliminary shape of the graphene industry chain from raw materials, application materials-functional devices to terminal fields. It is worth noting that with the development of the application market, in addition to serving the national key construction projects, the service capacity of graphene new materials for people's livelihood is continuously improving, and the application cooperation model is constantly innovating. With the promotion of industry leaders, the application of graphene in the industrial field is also expanding.

However, some cutting-edge achievements in the commercialization of graphene technology have already emerged. For example, in 2024, functional semiconductors made of graphene were launched; currently, China, the United States, and Europe have made synchronous breakthroughs in the technology of mass production of 8-inch graphene wafers; in the field of graphene chip heat dissipation, graphene thermal interface material products have begun to be commercialized, building a thermal management barrier for AI computing power and 5G high-speed transmission. In addition, the world's first clinical implant surgery of a graphene brain-computer interface was successfully performed in the United Kingdom.

What application scenarios are worth mining and cultivating in the next decade? Konstantin Novoselov, one of the 2010 Nobel Prize winners and the discoverers of graphene, said that the focus will be on sustainable development, medical health and communication. He particularly pointed out that various emerging battery technologies are constantly developing, and graphene may play an important role in them.

Konstantin Novoselov believes that in communication, especially quantum communication, with the development of 6G technology, the terahertz band is highly concerned, and the antenna made of graphene material will play an irreplaceable role in the terahertz system.
