SunSirs: The Market Price of Chloroform Fell Slightly in September

September 29 2025 11:16:47     SunSirs (John)

Price trend

The domestic chloroform market saw a slight decline in September. According to the SunSirs commodity market analysis system, as of September 28, the price of bulk chloroform in Shandong Province was 1,883 RMB/ton, down 3.42% from 1,950 RMB/ton at the beginning of September.

Analysis review

Raw material methanol prices fluctuated and consolidated, while liquid chlorine prices remained weak, leading to weak cost support for chloroform. Downstream R22 demand slowed as the hot weather subsided, and chloroform prices fell slightly.

In September, domestic methane chloride facilities were basically stable. As of September 28, the operating rate of methane chloride was around 87%.

In September, raw material methanol prices consolidated within a narrow range, while liquid chlorine prices weakened, providing weak cost support for chloroform. According to the SunSirs commodity market analysis system, as of September 28, the spot price of methanol was 2,257 RMB/ton, up 0.19% from 2,253 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month. As of September 28, the price of liquid chlorine in tank trucks in Shandong Province was around -50 RMB/ton.

In September, as the hot weather subsided, demand for the downstream refrigerant R22 slowed, leading to lower prices and weakening demand for chloroform. Furthermore, R22 quotas have been declining annually, negatively impacting chloroform in the medium and long term. In 2013, China’s baseline production quota for second-generation refrigerants was 426,400 tons. After several rounds of reductions, it was reduced to 163,600 tons by 2025. The production quotas for R22, R142b, and R141b were 149,100 tons, 3,400 tons, and 9,200 tons, respectively.

Market outlook

Analysts of methane chloride data from SunSirs believe that the cost support for chloroform was weak; the peak season was gradually ending and the demand for downstream refrigerant R22 was slowing down. The support for chloroform demand in the later period is limited, and it is expected that the chloroform market will be mainly weakly consolidated in the later period.
