SunSirs: The United States Strategic Reserved Cobalt Alloy, Cobalt Prices Ushered in a Continuous Rise

September 11 2025 16:02:22     SunSirs (John)

Price trend

According to the SunSirs Cobalt Market Analysis System, the price of cobalt was 270,600 RMB/ton on September 10, a 3.20% increase from the 262,200 RMB/ton on August 20. The upward trend in cobalt prices was driven by an increase in overseas orders and rising demand for cobalt in the international market.

U.S. Strategic Reserved Cobalt Alloy

The U.S. Department of Defense and the Defense Logistics Agency issued a tender document, planning to purchase approximately 7,480 tons of alloy-grade cobalt for strategic reserves over the next five years, with a purchase value of up to $500 million. Cobalt is a key raw material for the manufacture of components such as batteries, high-temperature alloys for aircraft engines, and gas turbines, and the United States relies primarily on imports. China, a major cobalt exporter, is providing further support for the cobalt market.

MB cobalt price trend

Data from SunSirs shows that MB cobalt prices have continued to rise since late August. The rise in international cobalt prices is positive for the domestic cobalt market, increasing the upward momentum of domestic cobalt prices.

Market outlook

Analysts of SunSirs believe that the US strategic reserve of cobalt alloys, rising international demand for cobalt, and increased overseas cobalt orders are driving upward momentum for cobalt prices, leading to a volatile rise. Cobalt prices are expected to consolidate strongly in the future.
