August 29 2025 11:23:52     SunSirs (Selena)According to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), EU passenger car sales grew 7.4% to 914,680 units in July 2025. However, cumulative sales for the first seven months fell 0.7% year-on-year.
In the first seven months of this year, the EU's pure electric vehicle market share was 15.6%, still far from the level required for the transition phase. Hybrid models continue to grow and remain the most popular powertrain type among buyers.
As of July, pure electric vehicles accounted for 15.6% of the EU market share, up from a low baseline of 12.5% in the same period last year. Hybrid electric vehicle sales continued to soar, accounting for 34.7% of the market share and remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers. Meanwhile, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles fell from 47.9% in the same period last year to 37.7%.
Electric Vehicles
In the first seven months of this year, EU pure electric vehicle sales reached 1,011,903 units, accounting for 15.6% of the market share. Three of the four largest EU markets (accounting for over 60%) saw growth: Germany (+38.4%), Belgium (+17.6%), and the Netherlands (+6.5%). In stark contrast, France saw a year-on-year decline of 4.3%.
The data also showed that EU hybrid electric vehicle sales increased to 2,255,080 units, driven primarily by growth in four major markets: France (+30.5%), Spain (+30.2%), Germany (+10.7%), and Italy (+9.4%). Hybrid electric vehicles account for 34.7% of the overall EU market.
During the same period, plug-in hybrid vehicle sales reached 561,190 units. This was driven by growth in key markets such as Spain (+94.5%), Germany (+59.2%), and Italy (+60.3%). As a result, plug-in hybrid vehicles now account for 8.6% of EU car sales, up from 6.9% previously.
Furthermore, July's year-over-year change alone shows a 39.1% increase in pure electric vehicles, a 14.3% increase in hybrid electric vehicles, and a 56.9% increase in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, maintaining strong growth for the fifth consecutive month.
Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles
Gasoline vehicle sales fell 20.1% to 1,834,375 units in the first seven months, with declines seen in all major markets. France saw the largest drop, with sales plummeting 33.6%, followed by Germany (-25.9%), Italy (-17.8%), and Spain (-12.6%). Gasoline vehicle sales saw their market share fall from 35.1% to 28.3%. Similarly, diesel vehicle sales fell 26.4%, resulting in a 9.5% market share.
Furthermore, July's year-over-year change showed gasoline and diesel vehicle sales falling 12% and 15.2%, respectively.
