SunSirs: The Price of Wastepaper and Corrugated Paper Stopped Rising and Fell in November, with Short-term Fluctuations being the main trend

November 29 2023 13:56:40     SunSirs (Selena)

According to the monitoring of the commodity market analysis system of SunSirs, the price of wastepaper in Zhejiang Province showed a downward trend in November. On November 28th, the average purchase price of A-grade waste yellow cardboard in Zhejiang Province was 1,558 RMB/ton, a decrease of 2.99% compared to the average price of 1,606 RMB/ton on November 1st. The price of corrugated paper has also shown a decline. On November 28th, the average ex factory price of 140g corrugated base paper was 2,808 RMB/ton, a decrease of 2.16% compared to the average price of 2,870 RMB/ton on November 1st.

By observing market changes, it can be seen that in early November, the prices of wastepaper in Zhejiang Province significantly decreased, and the domestic wastepaper market prices also showed a downward trend, including multiple production bases under Jiulong Paper, Shanying International, Liwen Paper, and regional scale enterprises. Due to the increase in holiday wastepaper, the arrival volume of wastepaper at the packaging station has increased, so the packaging station is actively shipping. However, the follow-up of new orders from the paper mill is weak, and the inventory of wastepaper is relatively high, resulting in a decrease in demand for wastepaper and a continuous decline in prices.

In mid to late November, the price of wastepaper continued to decline, and the atmosphere in the wastepaper market was relatively strong. The market saw more declines and less increases, and paper companies adjusted wastepaper prices according to their own needs. In the state of high inventory performance in paper mills, the demand for wastepaper remains weak, and the price of wastepaper continues to decline. As the end of the month approaches, there are also some regions where the operating rate of paper mills has increased, and the demand for wastepaper has increased, leading to signs of price recovery. However, there are relatively few paper mills that have raised prices, and there are mostly small fluctuations and adjustments.

By observing market changes, it can be seen that the price of corrugated paper remained stable and declined in early November. Due to the increasing supply-demand contradiction in the corrugated paper market, the market wait-and-see atmosphere intensified, and the weak follow-up of new orders from paper mills, corrugated paper prices showed downward pressure. On the supply side, the market is affected by the weak production and sales situation, and inventory pressure is putting pressure on upstream paper mills. Coupled with the weak decline in prices of main raw materials and wastepaper, there is currently no positive support for paper prices in terms of cost. On the demand side, there was insufficient release of terminal orders, coupled with no significant improvement in orders during the e-commerce festival, resulting in weak orders from downstream packaging factories and poor performance on the demand side.

In mid to late November, the price of corrugated paper remained on a downward trend, and the sufficient amount of spot goods gradually revealed supply pressure. However, demand was lower than expected, causing a certain drag on the market. With the end of the November E-commerce Festival, the demand for corrugated paper is limited, and orders for the Spring Festival and New Year's Day have not been released yet. The overall demand for corrugated paper is weak. Although leading paper mills have recently issued price increase letters, most of the second and third factories are mainly wait-and-see, and prices are still slightly reduced.

According to paper analysts from SunSirs, both wastepaper and corrugated paper prices are currently showing weakness. However, the frequent occurrence of price increase letters in the paper industry recently has a positive trend for the future market. With the gradual release of orders during the Spring Festival and New Year, packaging factories may see an increase in demand for corrugated paper. However, the addition of new production capacity has led to loose market supply, which may suppress the potential for price increases. It is expected that the prices of wastepaper and corrugated base paper will remain fluctuating in the short term.
