On September 7th, the main 2701 contract of natural rubber futures staged a breakout and upward trend, closing up 2.18% at 19,180 RMB per ton. This round of rise did not stem from a tight supply and demand situation; the core driver lies in the market's concentrated pricing of the risk of rubber production cuts in Southeast Asia caused by El Niño, with the weather premium becoming the core main line of the market trend.
El Niño Expectations Strengthen
The current global El Niño expectations continue to strengthen and will persist through the peak tapping season of major Southeast Asian rubber-producing countries. Core producing regions such as Thailand and Indonesia are facing risks of high temperature and drought. Rubber tree growth is highly dependent on a hot and humid environment; sustained high temperature and drought will directly inhibit latex secretion, reduce the number of effective tapping days, and in extreme cases, induce diseases and insect pests, suppressing annual rubber output. Rubber trees in Southeast Asia generally have aging tree ages, with limited new planting area and declining supply elasticity in producing regions. Under the same weather disturbances, the impact of production reduction will be further amplified. Although there is currently no large-scale substantive production reduction data, the market has already started trading the expectation of supply contraction in the fourth quarter and even early next year.
Social inventories remain stable with a slight decline
Domestic social inventories and Qingdao bonded zone inventories were in a slow destocking state from July to August 2026, providing certain support to the spot market. According to statistics, as of August 30, 2026, the total inventory of natural rubber in bonded and general trade in Qingdao stood at 627,700 tons, a week-on-week decrease of 3,800 tons and a month-on-month drop of 40,400 tons. Notably, the current inventory destocking is mainly driven by the marginal contraction of foreign supply, not the explosive growth of downstream consumption, and the actual terminal demand has not yet seen an improvement beyond expectations.
Downstream demand needs improvement
Demand shows a divergent pattern of "weak reality and strong expectations". Domestic tire enterprises still mainly adopt procurement based on actual demand, and large-scale active inventory restocking has not yet been implemented. However, with the arrival of the traditional peak consumption season of "Golden September and Silver October", the market expects a recovery in terminal tire demand. At the same time, affected by the geopolitical disturbances in the Middle East, the cost of synthetic rubber has risen and prices have soared, giving natural rubber a comparative advantage. Tire enterprises have adjusted their formulas and increased alternative procurement of natural rubber, further boosting the bullish sentiment in the market.
Pricing Factors on the Futures Board Related to Weather
From the perspective of disk structure, the near-month contracts of natural rubber show a strong upward trend, and the inter-month spreads have widened. However, this round of market trends is centered on expectation trading, while the actual fundamental situation still faces obvious constraints. If effective rainfall arrives in the main producing areas of Southeast Asia in the later stage and the drought risk is lifted, the premium brought by El Niño will fall rapidly. At the same time, the profits of downstream tire enterprises continue to be under pressure, and their acceptance of high-priced raw materials is limited, which will also restrict the upside space of rubber prices.
Overall, the El Niño expectation is the core driver of the price increase for natural rubber, and this round of market essentially reflects the pre-priced weather premium. Whether the subsequent market can continue depends not on the trading sentiment on the trading screen but on whether the actual precipitation situation in the Southeast Asian producing areas and the rubber output data can verify the previous production reduction expectations. Be alert to the risk of a rapid pullback on the trading screen if the production reduction expectations are falsified. In the short term, natural rubber futures are likely to maintain a strong operation pattern.
