Domestic sugar consumption for the 2026/27 season is projected at 15.73 million tonnes, an increase of only 30,000 tonnes from the previous season, while imports are expected to fall from 5.00 million tonnes in 2025/26 to 4.80 million tonnes. If domestic sugar production remains high amidst a lack of significant growth in consumption demand, the pace of China's sugar import procurement could slow further.
With domestic sugar consumption rising by only 30,000 tonnes year-on-year and demand lacking significant growth momentum, imports are expected to drop by 200,000 tonnes to 4.80 million tonnes. However, if domestic sugar production remains high, overall domestic supply will stay ample. Consequently, the pace of import procurement may slow further; the resulting loose supply-demand balance exerts a generally bearish influence on white sugar spot prices.
