Price trend
According to data from SunSirs, the average market price of light soda ash stood at 1,040 RMB/ton as of August 31, marking an increase of 10 RMB/ton (or 0.97%) from the 1,030 RMB/ton recorded on August 24; the soda ash market saw a slight rise over the past week.
Market Analysis
The soda ash market has recently been consolidating with a firm undertone. On the supply side, the operating rate hovers around 75%, marking a slight decline compared to the week before last; although market supplies remain ample and inventory pressure is significant, expectations of maintenance at Shandong Haitian’s soda ash plant in September have bolstered bullish sentiment, prompting some enterprises to raise their quotes. On the demand side, the downstream glass industry remains sluggish with high inventory levels; while there is steady demand for soda ash, overall market support is limited. Lacking significant positive drivers, the scope for a rebound in soda ash prices remains constrained.
According to data from SunSirs, the glass market has recently been undergoing a weak consolidation phase; as of August 31, the average market price stood at 11.95 RMB per square meter, a 1.24% decline from the 12.10 RMB per square meter recorded on August 24. Although some production lines have undergone cold repairs, capacity utilization remains high and inventory levels elevated. With sluggish downstream demand, the pace of destocking is slow; consequently, the pressure from high inventories has resulted in weak demand for soda ash from the glass sector.
Market Outlook
Currently, the domestic soda ash market faces overcapacity and significant supply pressure; demand from end-user markets is recovering slowly, providing insufficient support from downstream sectors. The fundamental supply-demand imbalance is unlikely to improve in the short term, and market sentiment remains bearish. Consequently, soda ash prices are expected to fluctuate weakly in the near future, with market shipment performance warranting close attention.
