Isobutyraldehyde prices fell back from high levels in August
According to the commodity market analysis system of SunSirs, the domestic quote for isobutyraldehyde stood at 8,133.33 RMB/ton as of August 26. This represents a significant increase of 22.00% from the price of 6,666.67 RMB/ton on August 1, though it marks a decline of 1.21% from the price of 8,233.33 RMB/ton on August 25. While the market for downstream neopentyl glycol has stabilized and demand support for isobutyraldehyde remains, the price of the raw material propylene has fluctuated downward; consequently, with falling costs and weakening demand support, the price of isobutyraldehyde has retreated from its high level.
The price of the raw material propylene rose initially and then fell
According to the Commodity Market Analysis System of SunSirs, the quoted price for propylene on August 26 was 8,807.67 RMB/ton; compared to the August 1 price of 7,927.67 RMB/ton, it showed an overall increase of 11.10% (following a trend of rising and then falling), while compared to the August 20 high of 9,017.67 RMB/ton, it retreated by 2.33%. Since mid-August, the price of propylene has fallen from its high, leading to reduced costs for isobutyraldehyde and intensifying downward pressure on isobutyraldehyde prices.
Downstream demand support for isobutyraldehyde weakened
Neopentyl glycol prices rose sharply in August. On August 26, Yantai Wanhua quoted prices at 9,950-10,100 RMB/ton—a significant increase from the 8,850-8,000 RMB/ton quoted on August 1—though prices had stabilized relative to August 20. Luxi Chemical quoted neopentyl glycol at 8,400 RMB/ton, a substantial rise from the 7,700 RMB/ton quoted on August 1, with prices also stabilizing compared to August 20. As prices climbed to high levels, downstream buying interest weakened and market apprehension regarding the high price points emerged, leading to divergent views among industry players; consequently, neopentyl glycol prices drifted lower in mid-August, and demand support from isobutyraldehyde diminished.
Supply continued to tighten
Continued tightening on the supply side was the primary driver behind the price increases in August. Isobutyraldehyde production dropped significantly; due to maintenance at Yantai Wanhua's facility, the operating rate for isobutyraldehyde fell to 60%. From August 7 to 13, weekly production stood at 1,067 tons against a consumption of 8,755.8 tons, resulting in a supply-demand gap of 1,914.25 tons; from August 14 to 20, production declined further to 976 tons, while consumption was 5,713 tons. With leading enterprises continuing to make additional external purchases, spot supplies of isobutyraldehyde remained tight, keeping prices firm at high levels.
Market Outlook
Analysts at SunSirs observe that current isobutyraldehyde prices are hovering near the highs of the past year. Upstream propylene prices initially rose but subsequently fell, weakening cost support; meanwhile, downstream neopentyl glycol prices have seen a gradual decline, though they still provide some underlying support for isobutyraldehyde. Overall, with falling costs and sluggish demand, upward momentum for isobutyraldehyde has significantly diminished, yet tightened supply is limiting the potential for price drops. In the short term, the market is likely to fluctuate at high levels, while expectations for a price decline in the medium term are increasing.
