Grain trade data from the European Commission indicates that grain imports for the 2026/27 season have so far exceeded levels seen during the same period last year. As of August 16, grain imports by the EU-27 for the 2026/27 season (which began on July 1) totaled 2,813,855 tonnes, marking a 9% increase compared to the same period in the 2025/26 season.
With EU grain imports reaching 2.8139 million tonnes by August 16—a 9% year-on-year rise—the region's grain supply has increased. This exerts downward pressure on spot prices, while near-month futures contracts are also expected to trade weakly due to expectations of ample supply.
Corn is a major grain import for the EU; the 9% year-on-year increase in total grain imports suggests that corn import volumes are also likely higher than last year. This outlook for looser supply is expected to weigh on prices for both corn spot markets and related futures contracts.
