The latest data from the General Administration of Customs shows that China’s imports of corn and corn flour totaled 350,000 tonnes in July 2026, a year-on-year increase of 527.3%. For the period of January to July 2026, cumulative imports reached 1.36 million tonnes, up 61.3% year-on-year.
The sharp 527.3% year-on-year surge in corn and corn flour imports in July—along with the 61.3% increase in cumulative imports for the first seven months—represents a significant rise in supply. This effectively supplements domestic availability and exerts notable downward pressure on both spot and futures prices for corn, acting as a generally bearish factor.
As corn is the primary raw material for producing corn starch, the substantial growth in corn imports eases domestic supply constraints; this weakens cost-side support for corn starch and exerts some downward pressure on its price, representing a mildly bearish factor.
