SunSirs: Weighed Down by Costs and Suppressed by Demand, the Price Center of Formaldehyde Has Shifted Downward
August 11 2026 15:01:51SunSirs(John)

According to SunSirs, the formaldehyde market experienced overall volatility and a downward trend during the first ten days of August. As of August 11, the average price of formaldehyde in the Shandong region stood at 1,228 RMB/ton, down 3.25% from the beginning of the month.

Analysis of Driving Factors

Cost side: Methanol acts as a drag; cost support has weakened.

During the first ten days of the month, methanol spot prices fluctuated downward, with formaldehyde prices following suit after a lag; methanol saw its steepest drop of the period on August 6 before staging a rapid recovery. In contrast, formaldehyde's rebound lacked momentum, and prices continued to drift lower without mirroring methanol's rally. The primary driver for formaldehyde has shifted from cost-side pressure to demand-side constraints; the recovery in methanol prices has been insufficient to lift formaldehyde, as the core bottleneck remains the lack of essential demand from the downstream panel industry.

Demand side: Traditional off-season; sluggish demand for wood-based panel adhesives.

July and August mark the traditional off-season for formaldehyde, with wood-based panels and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives serving as the primary downstream markets. High temperatures, heavy rainfall, and typhoons have constrained the operating rates of panel manufacturers. Meanwhile, insufficient orders for finished furniture and renovation projects mean downstream factories are limiting purchases to immediate needs rather than actively restocking. While demand for fine chemicals like urotropine remains stable, it is insufficient to drive the overall market. The lack of significant growth in the real estate sector—and the resulting limited pull on the panel industry supply chain—remains the primary factor suppressing the formaldehyde market.

Supply side: Operating rates have contracted slightly, and inventories are accumulating moderately.

Amid high-temperature weather, operational risks for formaldehyde plants have risen; coupled with compressed profit margins, some enterprises have voluntarily reduced operating loads, while the volume of new capacity remains limited. Finished product inventories are slowly rising from low-to-medium levels without yet reaching critical highs. While manufacturers show some willingness to support prices, weak demand limits their ability to do so effectively.

Market Outlook:

The market is expected to remain under pressure and weak through mid-to-late August, with little chance of a significant rebound. As the traditional peak season approaches in September, there are expectations for a marginal recovery; however, the extent of any price increase will depend on the actual strength of the rebound in operating rates for both methanol and wood-based panels.

1. Cost: The methanol market is experiencing volatility driven primarily by import arrivals, domestic plant maintenance, and geopolitical news; while downside potential is limited, upward momentum is weak, resulting in a neutral, fluctuating cost environment for formaldehyde.

2. Supply: If losses persist, formaldehyde producers will likely continue to lower operating rates and cut production to alleviate inventory pressure, thereby curbing further price declines; absent widespread plant maintenance, supply remains relatively ample.

3. Demand: The market remains in the summer off-season with little prospect of significant improvement in the panel industry; downstream buyers continue to purchase strictly on an as-needed basis.

Outlook: Formaldehyde prices are likely to fluctuate at low levels with limited rebound potential, though further slight localized declines cannot be ruled out; conditions for a significant price surge are absent.
