SunSirs: Lacking Upward Momentum, Formic Acid Prices Stabilized and Traded Sideways
August 11 2026 11:04:05SunSirs(John)

Data from the SunSirs commodity market analysis system indicates that the formic acid market has recently stabilized, showing little overall fluctuation. As of August 10, the benchmark price for domestic 85% industrial-grade formic acid stood at 1,800 RMB/ton, a decline of 21.74% compared to the same period last month. Prices have held steady at a cyclical low, with market trends clearly reflecting a tug-of-war between supply and demand; there is insufficient momentum for a short-term rise, and the outlook remains under pressure in the medium to long term.

In terms of market supply and demand, the current formic acid market is characterized by a mix of bullish and bearish factors, resulting in a dynamic equilibrium. A key factor supporting the stabilization of prices at current low levels is the low inventory held by manufacturers; low price points have encouraged downstream end-users to enter the market and stockpile, effectively drawing down manufacturer inventories. This low overall industry inventory level provides solid support for spot prices, preventing any further sharp decline. However, positive market drivers remain weak; overall end-user demand stays sluggish with no clear signs of recovery, and insufficient follow-through on essential downstream demand has kept trading activity subdued. This inability to stimulate a price rebound acts as the primary bearish factor constraining any upward movement in the market.

Looking at future supply-side trends, overall supply pressure within the industry is expected to rise gradually, exerting downward pressure on the market outlook. Several formic acid production units had previously undergone scheduled maintenance; as these maintenance cycles conclude and the units successively resume production, the volume of spot market supply will steadily increase. Against a backdrop of sluggish end-user demand, this influx of additional supply will disrupt the current fragile supply-demand balance and exacerbate market imbalance, leaving the formic acid market with little upward momentum while downside risks continue to accumulate.

Overall, the domestic formic acid market maintained stable prices at low levels during early August, supported by low inventory; however, market performance remained constrained by the dual bearish factors of sluggish end-user demand and the anticipated materialization of increased supply. In the short term, the market is likely to continue fluctuating within a low range, with little prospect of significant price volatility. In the medium to long term, as units undergoing maintenance fully resume production, supply-side pressure will be released en masse; given that demand is unlikely to rebound quickly, the overall outlook for the domestic formic acid market remains bearish, with the potential for further price declines. Close monitoring of supply and demand dynamics is required.
