SunSirs: Butyl Acrylate Market Rebounded After Halting Decline, and Multiple Factors Drove the Market Recovery
August 11 2026 09:09:25SunSirs(John)

Recently, the domestic butyl acrylate market has stabilized and rebounded from its lows. By analyzing the drivers of this price recovery—including costs, supply, demand, and the operational strategies of key industry players—we present a comprehensive overview of the cyclical shifts within this chemical monomer market.

I. Market Price Trends: Rapid recovery from the low-end range.

Data monitoring indicates that in early July, the average transaction price for butyl acrylate in East China fell to 6,750 RMB/ton, hitting a three-year low; market activity was characterized by low inventory levels and essential restocking, with no fundamental drivers to support a sustained price increase. From mid-July, however, prices entered a continuous upward trend; by July 16, mainstream regional quotes had risen to 7,850 RMB/ton—a cumulative increase of 1,100 RMB/ton. On July 15, a leading domestic producer raised its ex-factory price for butyl acrylate in North China to 8,300 RMB/ton—an increase of 800 RMB/ton in a single day—and this significant adjustment by a market leader drove a simultaneous upward shift in spot market price levels. By the latter half of July, mainstream domestic transaction prices stabilized in the 8,000–8,300 RMB/ton range, marking an increase of over 15% from the early-month lows and confirming a market rebound from the bottom.

II. Key Drivers of Upward Price Movement

(I) Inflexible rise in upstream raw material costs

Propylene is a key feedstock for butyl acrylate production. At the onset of the current market uptrend, propylene spot prices were the first to rise; compounded by geopolitical tensions that drove up the prices of basic energy commodities like crude oil and propane, costs across the propylene value chain climbed in tandem. The cumulative increase in raw material costs exceeded 1,200 RMB/ton, providing a direct price floor for butyl acrylate and reversing the previous situation of inverted margins and industry-wide losses. This upstream cost inflation triggered a top-down transmission effect, driving up ex-factory prices for acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, and other ester products.

(II) Leading producers were collectively pushing up prices, tightening supply.

Leading domestic producers of butyl acrylate have simultaneously adjusted their ex-factory quotes, fueling expectations of tightening market supply. Between July 14 and 16, multiple companies raised prices across their acrylic acid and butyl acrylate product lines, with some regions seeing single-adjustment increases of up to 800 RMB/ton; Wanhua Chemical raised prices consecutively from July 13 to 15, with increases ranging from 200 to 400 RMB/ton per adjustment; and Huayi Group followed suit, raising prices by 100 to 500 RMB/ton per adjustment.

Meanwhile, several production units across the industry have reduced output or are operating at lower capacity, limiting the volume of spot goods available for shipment. Consequently, overall market inventory has fallen to its lowest level of the year; this low-inventory environment has bolstered the resolve to maintain higher spot prices and alleviated the previous situation of oversupply.

(III) Demand support driven by essential restocking in downstream industries

Butyl acrylate is primarily used in downstream sectors such as coatings, water-based emulsions, and adhesives. In early July, downstream emulsion manufacturers engaged in concentrated contract pickups and spot market restocking; this surge in essential procurement depleted available market inventory and reversed the previous trend of sluggish trading. Amidst continuously rising raw material costs, downstream emulsion producers tentatively raised their quotes, effectively opening up price transmission channels across the supply chain and creating a market environment favorable to both supply and demand.

III. Impact of Industry Chain Linkages

Rising prices for butyl acrylate have triggered synchronous fluctuations across upstream and downstream products. Upstream demand for acrylic acid monomer is expected to improve, driving market quotes higher; meanwhile, related products such as methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate have seen only minor adjustments, while 2-ethylhexyl acrylate has edged up slightly. Prices for emulsion-related raw materials—including styrene and MMA—have also risen; in mid-to-late July, mainstream styrene prices reached 8,750–8,800 RMB/ton (an increase of nearly 1,000 RMB/ton in a single week), and MMA prices stabilized above 10,300 RMB/ton. Consequently, costs across the emulsion raw material sector have risen in tandem, placing significant cost pressure on mid- and downstream manufacturers.

IV. Outlook for Future Market Performance

Based on a synthesis of industry insights, the butyl acrylate market remains supported in the short term by both cost factors and low inventory levels; consequently, spot prices are likely to remain firm during the first ten days of August. From a medium- to long-term perspective, however, plans to restart production facilities are gradually being implemented, and estimated output for August shows a significant month-on-month increase; this rise in supply will progressively alleviate the current tightness in spot availability. Meanwhile, as the growth in end-user demand from the downstream coatings and emulsion sectors remains limited, the scope for further substantial price hikes is constrained, suggesting the market may shift from a unidirectional upward trend to range-bound fluctuation.

Industry bodies indicate that key market indicators to watch going forward center on three dimensions: price trends of upstream propylene feedstock, operating rates of domestic butyl acrylate production facilities, and operating rates of the downstream coatings industry; fluctuations in these variables will directly determine the range of market price movements.
