SunSirs: Driven by Favorable Factors Regarding Both Costs and Supply, PTA Prices Were Fluctuating with an Upward Bias
July 13 2026 15:36:46SunSirs(John)

After experiencing a sharp decline in June, PTA prices began a recovery in July—driven by concentrated maintenance shutdowns—and generally exhibited a pattern of fluctuating within a range with an upward bias. According to the SunSirs commodity market analysis system, the average spot market price for PTA in East China stood at 5,910 RMB/ton as of July 11, marking a 2.30% increase since the beginning of the month.

Cost side: PX maintenance provided a floor for costs

July marked the peak season for annual PX maintenance, with multiple large-scale PX units—including those at Shenghong, Zhejiang Petrochemical, and Hainan Refining & Chemical—shutting down simultaneously. Consequently, the operating rate of PX plants in Asia fell to a yearly low, while the price spread between PX and naphtha remained wide, firmly underpinning the cost floor for PTA. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices fluctuated within a narrow range of $70-$73; with limited geopolitical disruption, there was no risk of a collapse in cost support.

Supply side: Maintenance-driven contraction and continued inventory destocking

Major PTA production units—including those of Weilian Chemical, Honggang Petrochemical, and Zhongtai—underwent concentrated maintenance, causing the industry's operating rate to drop to a low of around 57% in July—a level rarely seen for this time of year. With market supplies tightening and inventories at both ports and plants steadily declining, spot processing margins remained high at 600-700 yuan per tonne, providing support that made spot prices resilient against declines.

Demand side: Textile off-season limited upside potential

July remains a traditional off-season for the textile industry; the overall operating rate for polyester stands at approximately 80%, and inventories of finished polyester filament are relatively high. With orders for autumn and winter goods from downstream weavers yet to be released in volume, factories are limiting themselves to sporadic, essential procurement rather than actively stockpiling, which constrains the upward potential of PTA prices. The market is primarily awaiting signals of restocking ahead of the August peak season.

Market Outlook:

Analysts at SunSirs believe that with the maintenance cycles for PX and PTA still underway and the supply-demand balance remaining tight, PTA prices will continue to fluctuate within a high range; solid support at the lower end makes a deep correction unlikely. As a large number of units resume operations between late July and early August, increasing supply will enter the market, shifting the focus of price trends to the actual volume of orders realized during the downstream peak season.
