Price trends
According to data from the SunSirs spot market tracking system, acetic acid prices in June initially fell before rising; as of June 29, the average market price stood at 3,056.67 RMB/ton—an increase of 33.34 RMB/ton from the 3,023.33 RMB/ton recorded at the beginning of the month, representing a monthly rise of 1.10%.
Market analysis
The acetic acid market saw prices fall and then rise in June. At the beginning of the month, constrained by demand, prices continued the downward trend observed in May. Subsequently, however, the temporary shutdown of a major production facility in Shandong—combined with an industry-wide operating rate of under 80% and a producer sentiment favoring price increases—halted the decline and led to a recovery. During the second half of the month, although producers faced little overall inventory pressure, downstream purchasing was driven primarily by immediate needs, which limited further price gains; amidst this tug-of-war between supply and demand, the market maintained a stable yet firm tone.
In June, the market for the feedstock methanol experienced weak, fluctuating performance. As of June 29, the average market price stood at 2,813 RMB/ton, marking a 10.98% decline from the 3,160 RMB/ton recorded at the beginning of the month. Early in the month, methanol prices trended upward amidst volatility, supported by geopolitical tensions and low inventory levels. However, during the middle and latter parts of the month, geopolitical tensions eased and expectations for increased methanol imports rose; simultaneously, demand remained sluggish due to the traditional off-season for domestic consumption. Strong bearish sentiment in the market caused methanol prices to retreat from their highs. Consequently, the feedstock side provided only limited support for acetic acid, curbing any significant rise in acetic acid prices.
Market outlook
Analysts at SunSirs observe that the operating rate for acetic acid has risen significantly compared to the beginning of the month, and demand for shipments has increased; however, downstream purchasing remains largely driven by immediate needs, and market trading activity is moderate. Meanwhile, raw material costs are providing limited support to acetic acid prices, and there is a lack of bullish drivers in the market. Consequently, acetic acid prices are expected to fluctuate within a narrow range in July, with market trends contingent on changes in supply and demand.
