I. Key Market Data (Futures & Spot)
1. Futures Market (PET Main Contract)
Closing Price: 6,630 RMB/tonne; a sharp single-day drop of 294 RMB (-4.24%).
Intraday Volatility: Ranged from a low of 6,542 RMB/tonne to a high of only 6,796 RMB/tonne (a spread of 254 RMB).
Intraday Trend: Opened higher but immediately trended downward; no significant rebound occurred. The market maintained a one-way downward trajectory all day as bearish sentiment surged and the bulls offered no resistance.
Open Interest & Capital: The main contract saw increased open interest alongside the price drop, indicating strong bearish capital entry and a clear technical breakdown signal.
2. Spot Market
Major Manufacturer Price Range: 7,500–7,650 RMB/tonne; a general drop of 200–350 RMB/tonne compared to last Friday (June 19), marking a significant acceleration in the decline.
Small-Order Quotes: Low-end quotes have slipped to around 7,450 RMB/tonne; negotiation room for large orders has widened, with actual transaction prices open to discussion.
Export Market (FOB Shanghai): Mainstream quotes at 1,030–1,050 USD/tonne (down 30–40 USD/tonne); overseas buyers are increasingly adopting a wait-and-see approach.
Forward Orders (June–July Delivery): 7,600–7,750 RMB/tonne; forward prices have softened in tandem, reflecting a lack of market confidence in the medium-term outlook.
3. Upstream Raw Materials: Broad-based slump; "collapse-style" drop in costs.
MEG (Main Contract): Closed at 3,989 RMB/tonne (down over 5% intraday); broke through the lower bound of the previous consolidation range to hit a new periodic low. Port inventories remain high, and the loose spot market persists; the product has become the leader of the decline within the polyester chain.
PTA Futures: Weakened in tandem; cost support continues to erode.
PX: Followed crude oil downward; Asian PX prices saw a significant pullback.
International Crude Oil: The geopolitical risk premium associated with the Middle East dissipated rapidly, and market concerns regarding supply disruptions were largely alleviated. Speculative long positions exited en masse, causing oil prices to fall continuously and shifting the cost basis for the entire polyester chain downward.
Polymerization Cost Calculation: Within a single day, raw material price drops dragged down the production cost of PET bottle chips by nearly 300 RMB/tonne; manufacturers were forced to successively lower their offers to align with the shifting cost curve.
II. Core Drivers of Today's Decline
Cost Side: A collapse across the board, constituting the primary bearish factor.
Geopolitical Premium Vanishes: Signs of easing tensions between the US and Iran emerged, and maritime blockades were lifted. The previously feared risk of obstructed passage through the Strait of Hormuz was largely eliminated, effectively squeezing the geopolitical premium out of crude oil prices.
Synchronized Decline in Energy & Chemical Sectors: Weakening oil prices drove a downward shift in the cost basis for the entire polyester chain. PX, PTA, and MEG fell in succession, creating a clear transmission chain: Crude Oil → PX → PTA → PET Bottle Chips.
MEG Leads the Decline, Exacerbating Pessimism: Due to fundamental weaknesses—specifically high inventories and ample supply—MEG suffered the steepest drop in the polyester chain. This directly lowered the polymerization cost for PET bottle chips and further dampened market sentiment. Supply Side: Expectations of looser supply persist; increased supply is imminent.
Concentrated release of new capacity: Multiple long-idled units are scheduled to restart between June and July. Coupled with the anticipated launch of new capacity totaling around one million tonnes from producers like Tiansheng, Hanjiang, and Kesen, a clear increase in domestic PET bottle chip supply lies ahead, leading to a pessimistic market outlook regarding the supply-demand balance for the post-July period.
Existing capacity operating at medium-to-high levels: The industry's overall operating rate currently hovers around 72%. Plant inventories have risen slightly to 9.67 days' worth of stock, and pressure on product circulation is mounting.
High profits drive maximum output: PET bottle chip processing margins previously peaked at over 1,400 RMB/tonne. These lucrative margins incentivized plants to maintain high operating rates, resulting in ample spot market supply and a lack of support from product shortages.
Demand Side: The peak season is lackluster; purchasing is driven by immediate needs, with no willingness to chase rising prices.
Traditional peak season meets "price resistance": Although June through August marks the traditional peak consumption season for beverage packaging (a period of peak stocking for carbonated drinks, tea beverages, and bottled water), downstream blow-molding plants and beverage companies are generally resistant to current high prices, resulting in weak follow-through on new orders.
Extremely cautious purchasing patterns: Downstream buyers are limiting purchases to immediate needs and specific orders, avoiding advance stockpiling. Transactions at high price points are sporadic, market trading is sluggish, and the production-to-sales ratio remains low.
Slowing growth in terminal beverage output: Domestic soft drink production grew by only 0.4% year-on-year from January to April; the growth in demand lags far behind the expansion of supply. While export markets have grown, the volume is insufficient to offset the downward pressure caused by weak domestic demand.
Profit Side: Processing margins are contracting rapidly, dampening bullish sentiment. PET bottle chip processing margins previously climbed to a high of over 1,400 RMB/tonne, a lucrative level that spurred an accelerated release of supply.
With raw material prices plunging—and finished product prices falling even more sharply—current processing margins have rapidly retreated to the 400–700 RMB/tonne range. This significant margin compression has undermined bullish confidence and limited the scope for manufacturers to sustain higher prices moving forward. III. Short-term Market Outlook (3–7 days)
1. Market Tone: Oscillating with a bearish bias; downward trend persists.
Futures Market:
Primary downside support: 6,500 RMB/tonne (convergence of psychological and technical support).
Strong support level: 6,300 RMB/tonne (previous low zone).
Upside resistance levels: 6,800 RMB/tonne and 7,000 RMB/tonne; given the current market sentiment, rebound potential is extremely limited, and any technical bounce is likely to face selling pressure from bears.
Spot Market:
Factory quotes are prone to decline rather than rise; each drop in raw material prices triggers a corresponding downward adjustment in spot offers. Unless crude oil stages an unexpectedly sharp rebound, spot price levels will continue to drift lower.
2. Potential Bullish Factors
Sudden geopolitical disruptions affecting crude oil (e.g., renewed tensions in the Middle East) causing a spike in cost-push pressure;
Temporary maintenance shutdowns at certain facilities due to compressed margins or technical issues, leading to a short-term contraction in supply;
Concentrated restocking by downstream buyers at lower price points, driving a temporary surge in trading volume and a recovery in market sentiment.
3. Persistent Bearish Pressures
New production capacity is coming online in overlapping waves (current and future phases), effectively cementing a medium-term outlook of loose supply;
High inventory levels of ethylene glycol remain unresolved, suppressing the cost floor for the entire polyester industry chain;
Downstream purchasing sentiment remains conservative; there is a lack of momentum for sustained stockpiling during the traditional peak season, with a "buy-on-rise, not on-fall" mentality prevailing;
A bearish trend has established itself in the futures market, with moving averages aligned in a bearish formation and capital flows remaining consistently bearish.
