On April 20th, the ninth term of the third meeting of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Oil and Grain Society's Fat Branch was held in Qingdao, Shandong. The meeting discussed the development trend of the fat industry, shared the achievements of cutting-edge fat technology, and studied and implemented key work. Wang RuiRMB, the chairman of the Expert Committee of the China Grain and Oil Association and a professor-level senior engineer, delivered a report on "Introduction to the Production, Consumption, and Import and Export of Grain and Oil in China in 2025". He pointed out that in 2025, China's self-sufficiency rate of edible oil was 36.6%, an increase of 2.4 percentage points over the previous year; the per capita consumption of edible oil decreased by 0.8 kilograms compared to the previous year.
The report shows that the total output of the eight major oil crops in China in 2025 was 77.639 million tons, an increase of 1.797 million tons, or 2.37%, from the 75.842 million tons in 2024; the amount of domestically produced oil used was 45.2 million tons, an increase of 1.2 million tons, or 2.7%, from the 44 million tons in 2024; and the amount of edible vegetable oil extracted was 14.64 million tons, an increase of 0.3 million tons, or 2.1%, from the 14.34 million tons in 2024. The data indicate that the total output of the eight major oil crops, the amount of domestically produced oil used, and the amount of edible vegetable oil extracted from domestically produced oil all reached record highs in 2025.
In 2025, the total import of various oilcakes in China was 120.0 million tons, an increase of 5.0 million tons, a growth of 4.35% compared to 2024, including the import of soybeans of 111.833 million tons, an increase of 6.8 million tons, a growth of 6.5% compared to 2024; the total import of various edible vegetable oils in China was 76.77 million tons, a decrease of 3.66 million tons, a decrease of 4.6% compared to 2024.
In 2025, the total consumption of edible oil in China was 40.03 million tons (excluding 3.65 million tons of exports), including 36.63 million tons for edible consumption and 3.4 million tons for industrial and other consumption; the self-sufficiency rate of edible oil was 36.6%, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the previous year's 34.2%.
In 2025, the per capita consumption of edible oil in China was 28.5 kilograms (calculated based on the total annual consumption of edible oil of 40.030 million tons and the total population of 1.40489 billion people), a decrease of 0.8 kilograms from 29.3 kilograms in 2024, which is the result of science-based and economical use of oil education.
