According to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), EU passenger car sales increased by 5.8% year-on-year to 963,319 units in December 2025. For the full year 2025, EU passenger car sales saw a slight increase of 0.8% to approximately 10.6 million units. However, overall sales remain significantly below pre-pandemic levels.
In 2025, the market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the EU reached 17.4%, an increase from 13.6% in the previous year, in line with annual expectations, but still with room for growth to keep pace with the transition. Hybrid vehicles were the most popular powertrain type among consumers, accounting for 34.5% of the market, remaining the preferred choice for EU consumers. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are also consolidating their market position. Meanwhile, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel cars fell to 35.5%, down from 45.2% in 2024.
Electric Vehicles
In 2025, a total of 1,880,370 new battery electric vehicles were registered in the EU, representing a 17.4% market share. All four major EU markets (which together account for 62% of BEV registrations) saw growth: Germany (+43.2%), the Netherlands (+18.1%), Belgium (+12.6%), and France (+12.5%).
The data also shows that new hybrid vehicle registrations in the EU increased to 3,733,325 units, mainly driven by growth in the four major markets: Spain (+23.1%), France (+21.6%), Germany (+8%), and Italy (+7.9%). Hybrid models accounted for 34.5% of the total EU market.
During the same period, plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations continued to grow, reaching 1,015,887 units. This was mainly due to increased sales in major markets such as Spain (up 111.7%), Italy (up 86.6%), and Germany (up 62.3%). As a result, plug-in hybrid vehicles now account for 9.4% of total EU car registrations, up from 7.2% last year. Furthermore, looking solely at the year-on-year changes in December, sales of pure electric vehicles increased by 51%, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 36.7%, and hybrid electric vehicles by 5.8%.
Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles
In 2025, EU gasoline car registrations decreased by 18.7%, with declines in all major markets. France saw the largest decrease, with registrations plummeting by 32%, followed by Germany (-21.6%), Italy (-18.2%), and Spain (-16%).
To date, new car registrations totaled 2,880,298 units, with the market share of gasoline cars falling from 33.3% in the previous year to 26.6%. The diesel car market continued its decline, with registrations falling by 24.2%, and its market share in 2025 was only 8.9%.
Additionally, looking solely at the year-on-year changes in December, gasoline car sales decreased by 19.2% year-on-year, and diesel car sales decreased by 22.4% year-on-year.
