SunSirs: China Imports 490 Million Tons of Coal in December 2025, Down 9.6% Year-on-Year

Data released by China's General Administration of Customs on January 14 shows that in December 2025, China imported 58.597 million tons of coal. This represents an increase of 6.251 million tons, or 11.94%, compared to the 52.346 million tons imported during the same period last year. Compared to November's 44.053 million tons, imports rose by 14.544 million tons, marking a 33.01% increase.

From January to December 2025, China imported a total of 490.27 million tons of coal, down 9.6% year-on-year.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's industrial raw coal output from enterprises above designated size reached 4.83 billion tons in 2025, up 1.2% year-on-year. Customs statistics show that China imported 490 million tons of coal nationwide in 2025, down 9.6% year-on-year. Preliminary statistics from the Statistics and Information Department of the China National Coal Association indicate that 15 large coal enterprises reported raw coal production exceeding 50 million tons in 2025, one fewer than last year. The combined raw coal output of these 15 enterprises reached 2.7 billion tons, an increase of 20 million tons or 0.7% compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the latest statistics from the Shaanxi Coal Industry Association show that by the end of December, Shaanxi's coal production reached 804.617 million tons, an increase of 22.472 million tons or 2.9% year-on-year, accounting for 16.7% of the national coal output. In 2025, the province's coal sales volume was 700.4352 million tons, an increase of 13.2739 million tons or 1.93% year-on-year. As of the end of December, the province's coal inventory stood at 2.0061 million tons. In December, 246 mines in Shaanxi maintained normal production operations, producing 61.8873 million tons of coal and selling 66.04724 million tons. The comprehensive coal price in Shaanxi at the end of December was 656 RMB per ton, down 54 RMB per ton month-on-month, a decrease of 8.71%; and decreased by 42 RMB/ton compared to the same period last year, a drop of 6.91%. Among 14 representative coal specifications, one variety saw a price increase month-on-month while 13 varieties decreased, with an average decline of 47.9 RMB/ton, a drop of 7.7%. Compared to the same period last year, 12 varieties decreased and 2 varieties increased, with an average decline of 70.4 RMB/ton, a drop of 10%.

Reports indicate that Inner Mongolia's coal production will stabilize above 1.25 billion tons in 2026.

In 2025, Xinjiang Railway's annual freight volume reached 250 million tons, marking a 5.3% year-on-year increase.
