SunSirs: U.S. Slaps 25% Tariff Hike on Key Semiconductors and Imports
January 15 2026 13:19:28Securities Times (lkhu)

Tariffs imposed suddenly.

According to CCTV News, on January 14, 2026 local time, the White House announced that starting from the 15th, it will impose a 25% ad valorem tariff on some imported semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and derivatives.

Previously, on August 6, 2025, local time, U.S. President Trump stated that the United States would impose a tariff of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors. Trump said that if they are manufactured in the United States, no fees will be charged.

Trump told reporters at the White House that day that this tariff rate would apply to "all chips and semiconductors entering the United States," but would not apply to enterprises that have committed to or have initiated procedures to manufacture relevant products in the United States.

It is worth noting that on January 14, 2026, local time, the U.S. Supreme Court did not rule on the legality of the Trump administration's tariff policy, and the relevant cases still lack a final judgment.

On the same day, the U.S. Supreme Court announced three rulings, but did not make a decision on the case involving the legality of President Trump's implementation of large-scale global tariff measures.

After taking office in 2025, the Trump administration invoked the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act and introduced a series of tariff increase measures through executive orders without congressional approval, triggering a series of legal lawsuits in the United States.

After the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Court of International Trade respectively ruled that the Trump administration's package of tariff policies was illegal, the Trump administration appealed to the Federal Supreme Court. The Federal Supreme Court originally announced that it would issue a ruling on the legality of the tariff policies on January 9, but it did not release the ruling result on that day. Instead, it announced that the ruling date would be postponed to January 14.

In November 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court held a hearing on the legality of the Trump administration's tariff policy and heard relevant arguments. During the debate, most Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism about the government's reliance on declaring a "national emergency" to impose comprehensive tariff policies. Some justices questioned whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act should grant the president the authority to impose additional tariffs.

WTO: Nearly 20% of global imported goods are affected by measures such as tariffs

The World Trade Organization's annual "Trade Measures Monitoring Report" released in December 2025 shows that currently 19.7% of global imported goods are affected by tariffs and other similar measures, while this proportion was only 12.6% a year ago.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stated at the formal meeting of the Trade Policy Review Body that the global trading system is experiencing the most severe turbulence in 80 years, with a significant increase in unilateral tariffs, heightened geopolitical tensions, and escalating regional conflicts.
