Reporters learned from the China Geological Survey, which is under the Ministry of Natural Resources, on Jan 8 that China has made new progress in mineral resources exploration recently, with new breakthroughs in Chromite and unconventional oil and gas exploration.
The China Geological Survey said that in the cover area of the Sarttakh mining belt in Xinjiang, China has discovered a new Sarttakh 27 mine group, with 20 ore bodies delineated, with an average grade of 30.73%, achieving the largest mineral discovery in the area in nearly four decades. Chromite is a strategic mineral that China urgently needs. It is black to brown-black in color and has a semi-metallic luster. It is mainly used for smelting special alloys containing cobalt, nickel, tungsten and other elements. It is an indispensable material in the fields of aviation, aerospace, automobiles and shipbuilding.
In addition to the newly discovered chromite iron ore, China has focused on the Permian shale formation in the Euxi area, achieving a breakthrough in the flow of unconventional oil and gas industry, opening up new shale gas reservoirs and types, and realizing the effective expansion of shale gas exploration from the Sichuan Basin to the Euxi area. The new geological resource volume of shale gas is 132.95 billion cubic meters, further consolidating the resource base of the Euxi shale gas resource reserve area.
The Ministry of Natural Resources, China Geological Survey, jointly with the Department of Natural Resources of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, carried out chromite prospecting and exploration in the covered area of the Sartohai South Ore Belt in Xinjiang. A new Sartohai 27 ore group was discovered, with 20 ore bodies delineated, having an average grade of 30.73%. This marks the largest prospecting discovery in the region in nearly 40 years, providing strong support for the completion of the "14th Five-Year Plan" chromite prospecting targets and tasks.
Innovative exploration technology methods for magnetite have been formed.
A combination of ore prospecting signs such as "rocks phase zoning + alteration zoning + structure" were established, and the innovative "geophysical multi-method multi-scale weak anomaly signal extraction" technology was implemented. Based on the geophysical achievements, 13 drilling holes were carried out for verification, and 10 of them encountered thick layered massive magnetite ore bodies, greatly improving the accuracy of ore body positioning.
The ore-bearing rock facies of the chromite in the Salto sea area were re-determined. In the past, the focus of mineral exploration in the Salto sea area was on the pure peridotite and the dunite with pure peridotite , this work found 11 chromite bodies in the carbonatized ultramafic rock, accounting for 70% of the ore volume discovered this time, and it was determined that the carbonatized ultramafic rock at the bottom was also an important ore-bearing rock facies, which greatly expanded the mineral exploration space in this area.
Under the guidance of the Geological Survey Management Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the China Geological Survey and the Natural Resources Department of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region jointly deployed, the Xi'an Geological Survey Institute of the Survey Bureau, in conjunction with the Tacheng Geological Team of the Xinjiang Geological Bureau, the Xi'an Mineral Resources Survey Center of the Survey Bureau, and the National Experimental Testing Center, formed the Saltoke chromite prospecting assault team, carried out the Saltoke Chromite prospecting campaign, and formed a good situation of coordination and linkage between the central and local governments, and the concentration of efforts to overcome difficulties.
The important mineral exploration results achieved in the mineral exploration battle in Salto Lake, Xinjiang, the innovative mineral exploration technology methods and new mineral exploration insights formed, not only boosted the confidence in Chromite mineral exploration, but also have important reference significance for the mineral exploration of the same type of Chromite.
