China pledged to stabilize grain production and enhance its capacity to grow oilseeds such as soybeans to reduce imports and ensure food security, according to minutes of an agricultural policy meeting released on Tuesday.
Officials attending the Central Rural Work Conference held on Monday and Tuesday stated that China must stabilize grain and edible oil production, improve crop varieties, and enhance quality, Xinhua News Agency reported. Policy makers pledged to “enhance diversified grain supply capabilities” and “promote high-quality development of high-standard farmland” through zoned and categorized planning.
The minutes stated that grain production must never be neglected, calling for the integration of high-quality land, seeds, machinery, and farming methods to elevate overall agricultural productivity and quality.
Officials from China's Ministry of Agriculture also called for increased grain and oilseed production and higher self-sufficiency in soybeans during a separate meeting on Tuesday.
Data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics earlier showed the country's total grain output reached a record 714.9 million tons this year, up 1.2% from 2024.
