Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the 26th shows that in 2025, the country's cotton output reached 6.641 million metric tons, an increase of 477,000 metric tons or 7.7% compared to the previous year.
The data indicates that the increase in national cotton output was driven by both expanded planting area and higher yield per unit area. In 2025, the national cotton planting area reached 44.687 million mu (approximately 2.98 million hectares), an increase of 2.113 million mu (approximately 147,000 hectares) or 5.0% compared to the previous year. The national cotton yield per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares) was 148.6 kilograms, an increase of 3.8 kilograms or 2.6% compared to the previous year, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth.
By region, Xinjiang produced 6.165 million tons of cotton, an increase of 479,000 tons or 8.4% over the previous year. The Yangtze River Basin produced 220,000 tons, a decrease of 2,000 tons or 0.7%. The Yellow River Basin produced 203,000 tons, a decrease of 3,000 tons or 1.5%.
