China National Petroleum Corporation Coal Seam Gas Company announced on December 12th that on December 8th, China's largest coal and rock gas field, the Dajiji gas field, produced 101.2 million cubic meters of coal and rock gas per day, a year-on-year increase of 56%, demonstrating a strong trend of increased production. Since this year, the daily production of coal and rock gas from this gas field has continuously broken through the 700, 800, 900, and 1000 million cubic meters marks, achieving a steady leap of "changing the head of the word every quarter", and has built an annual production capacity of 3 million tons of oil and gas equivalent, which is of great significance for alleviating the contradiction between natural gas supply and demand and ensuring national energy security.
As a "vanguard" leading the development of the coalbed methane industry, China National Petroleum Corporation's Coalbed Methane Company has always listed the development of coalbed methane as its strategic focus, innovatively constructed a theoretical system for the enrichment of coalbed methane, successfully developed key core technologies such as "Black Gold Target Body Dense Seam Network Fracturing", "Geological Engineering Integration Guidance", and "3000米 Ultra-Long Horizontal Section", and injected hard-core technological power into the large-scale development of gas fields.
Before the "14th Five-Year Plan", China's traditional exploration theory believed that coal seams deeper than 1,500 meters had poor storage capacity, low gas content, and high development costs, and they were regarded as a "no-go zone" for coal bed methane development. Globally, there was little attention paid to the resource potential at this depth. China National Petroleum Corporation's Coal Bed Methane Company dared to practice and explore, and in August 2019, based on indoor experiments, they explored the acid fracturing process in the first coal rock test well, Da Ji 3-7, Well No. 2. After the well was put into production, it obtained industrial gas flow in the No. 8 coal rock section at a depth of more than 2,000 meters, breaking through the previous "fear of depth" ideological shackles. It not only revealed the development value of coal rock gas but also became China's first coal rock gas discovery well.
To solve the problem of efficient development of coalbed methane, the technical team of China National Petroleum Corporation's Coal Seam Gas Company innovated the concept of "large-scale fragmentation and through-type" transformation for deep coal reservoirs, and constructed a "extrême volume fracturing" technical path. In October 2021, the Jishan 6-7 Ping 01 well tested a daily gas production of 1.01 million cubic meters, becoming the first commercial development breakthrough well of deep coalbed methane in China, laying a technical foundation for the subsequent series of horizontal wells in the Dajiang Gas Field.
In recent years, the scientific research team of the Coal Seam Gas Company has been deeply engaged in the study of basic theories, revealing the dual-phase mode of gas "adsorption-free" in deep coal and rock strata. Through the process of practice-knowledge-repractice-reknowledge, it has innovatively formed five core technologies with independent intellectual property rights, providing a solid support for the efficient development of the national-level deep coal and rock gas field, the Dajiji Gas Field. In December 2024, the "Efficient Prospecting and Comprehensive Breakthrough of Coal and Rock Gas in the Loess Plateau Basin" project completed by the Coal Seam Gas Company won the Special Prize for Prospecting of China Petroleum, and the Linfen Gas Production Management Area in the main production area of coal and rock gas was rated as one of the "Top Ten Gas Production Plants of China Petroleum". The Dajiji block discovered the world's first super-large deep coal seam (rock) gas field, which won the Top Ten Prospecting Achievements of the Chinese Geological Society in 2024.
Today's Dajili gas field has become a model benchmark for the development of coalbed methane, and the effect of high-yield well groups is prominent: the highest daily gas production of a single well exceeds 100,000 cubic meters, which is one order of magnitude higher than that of medium and shallow gas wells; the Jishen 11-6 well pad has produced more than 100 million cubic meters of gas from three wells, becoming the 15th well pad with a cumulative production of more than 100 million cubic meters of coalbed methane in the gas field; Jishen 10-8 No. 01 well, as a "model well", has produced more than 73 million cubic meters of gas in 30 months of stable production, setting three records: stable production time, stable production capacity, and single well EUR (final recoverable reserves). Since this year, the horizontal section of Jishen 8-3 No. 01 well has been completed with a length of 3036 meters, refreshing the longest horizontal section record in China's coalbed methane; Jishen 8-5 well pad innovatively applied the well control pressure production technology, and the self-flowing stable production cycle is more than three times longer than that of conventional well pads.
