The National Cotton Market Monitoring System conducted a nationwide cotton yield survey for 2025 from late October to early November. The sample covered 14 provinces (autonomous regions), 46 cotton-growing counties (cities, production and construction corps), and 1,730 designated cotton-growing information contact households. Results indicate that the national average cotton yield in 2025 reached 161.7 kilograms per mu, a 4.4% increase year-on-year. Based on the monitored actual planted area of 45.803 million mu, total national production is projected at 7.409 million tons, up 11.0% year-on-year. Xinjiang accounted for 7.047 million tons of this total, representing a 12.2% year-on-year increase.
Cotton production in the northwest inland regions saw significant year-on-year growth, though yield performance varied. In 2025, Gansu Province achieved a cotton yield of 126.8 kg/mu, up 7.8% year-on-year, with production reaching 26,000 tons, a 4.0% increase. Xinjiang recorded an average cotton yield of 171.8 kg/mu, rising 3.7% year-on-year, with production totaling 7.047 million tons, a 12.2% increase. In Northern Xinjiang, generally favorable growing season weather and more refined field management practices led to year-on-year increases in both yield per mu and total production. In Southern Xinjiang, localized yield declines occurred. Drought conditions during the late growth stage in Bachu, Yuepuhu, Yuli, and Kuqa reduced single boll weight and lint percentage. However, total production remained stable due to an increase in planted area.
The Yellow River Basin experienced a significant decline in cotton output, while the Yangtze River Basin saw improved yields per unit area but overall production still decreased. The Yellow River Basin recorded an average yield of 76.9 kg per mu, down 4.2% year-on-year. Some areas faced extensive continuous rainfall during the boll-opening stage. Shandong Province saw the largest yield decline, while Shanxi and Shaanxi Provinces experienced slight year-on-year decreases. The Yangtze River Basin recorded an average yield of 68.7 kg/mu, a 4.0% year-on-year increase. Hubei, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces saw notable yield growth due to improved field management, while parts of Jiangxi and Hunan experienced slight yield declines from persistent rainfall. With continued contraction in inland cotton planting areas, overall production declined year-on-year. Total output in the Yellow River Basin is projected at 207,000 tons, down 11.2% year-on-year; Total output in the Yangtze River Basin is projected at 121,000 tons, down 4.6% year-on-year.
